TAMPA, Fla. – After starting the conference season with a series win, the University of Tulsa softball team is headed to Tampa, Fla. to face the South Florida Bulls in the first road matchup of conference season for the Golden Hurricane.
Due to Easter weekend, the series will run on Thursday, Friday and Saturday instead of the usual weekend game days. Games one and two will start at 3 p.m. (CT), and Saturday's finale will have a 10 a.m. (CT) first pitch time. All games will air on ESPN+ with Ryan Urquhart bringing fans the action alongside former South Florida ace Georgina Corrick.
The Golden Hurricane (16-17, 2-1 AAC) finished last week with a 2-3 record but took two of three from the visiting Memphis Tigers in the conference opener. Maura Moore's second no-hitter of the season, an 11 strikeout performance on Saturday, was the highlight of the weekend. Moore also threw a spectacular 8.2 innings against No. 2 Oklahoma State on Wednesday of the past week as Tulsa gave the nationally ranked Cowgirls all they could handle before eventually falling 3-1 in nine innings.
Moore earned a conference honor roll selection for her performance over week eight of the season. Also earning the honor was senior catcher Rylee Keith. Keith only started three games but played in all five and had a major impact throughout the week. She delivered the key single against Oklahoma State to send the game to extras. She also homered to tie game one against Memphis in the pivotal sixth inning. Keith homered again the following day and finished the week hitting .400 with five RBI.
Tulsa has a trio of players who have been spectacular in two-out hitting this season. Haley Morgan, Kailyn Bearpaw and Imani Edwards have all come through with big hits in potential inning-ending situations. Morgan is leading the team with a .486 batting average in such situations, delivering in 18 of 37 attempts with nine RBI. Bearpaw is right under her, hitting .469 with 15 successful attempts and a team-leading 13 RBI in such situations. Edwards is batting .350 and has driven in four runs with two away.
South Florida comes into this weekend's action with a 22-18, 3-3 AAC record. The Bulls were swept this past weekend by #23 Wichita State, seven days after South Florida did the same to East Carolina.
Tulsa enters this weekend's series with an 11-12 record against South Florida and an 8-6 record in Tampa. The Hurricane has won seven of the past 10 games played on the road in the series. Last season, the two teams met and split a pair of games. South Florida took the opener 2-1 before Tulsa responded with an 8-0 win in game two. The rubber match was called due to inclement weather.
Emilee Hanlon and Marissa Trivelpiece lead the team with batting averages of .310 and .308. Trivelpiece also leads the team with 19 RBI and three home runs. Hallie Bryant is hitting .244 but has come through with some big hits, driving in 16 runs, good for second on the team.
In the circle, Payton Dixon is the team's ace, recording a 1.47 ERA this season. Dixon has 20 appearances and 13 starts with six complete games. She's tossed 90.2 innings and struck out 75 batters while allowing only 19 runs.
Following the weekend's action, Tulsa has a rematch against the #2 Oklahoma State Cowgirls set for Tuesday, April 11, this time in Stillwater. The Golden Hurricane will return to the Collins Family Softball Complex next weekend to host UCF for a weekend series against the Knights.
