Tulsa Drops Extra Innings Battle with South Florida 2-1

4/7/2023 6:18:00 PM | Softball

Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. –
The University of Tulsa softball team took South Florida to extras but was unable to take down the hosts as the Bulls scored in the bottom of the eighth to win 2-1 on Friday afternoon.

Tulsa dropped to 16-19, 2-3 in The American with the loss, while South Florida improved to 24-18, 5-3 in conference play. Friday's defeat clinches the first conference series loss of the season for the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa falls to 0-2 in extra innings games this season while South Florida improves to 5-1.

Kylee Nash (6-10) pitched a fantastic game for the Hurricane despite the loss. She went a complete 7.2 innings with a strikeout while only allowing two runs on three hits. The winning double was the lone extra base hit of the game.

Three pitchers split the time in the circle for South Florida. Jaden Martinez got the start and threw three innings and allowed three hits and a walk. Vivian Ponn pitched three innings as well and was tagged for Tulsa's run. Gabriella Nori (5-6) pitched the seventh and eighth innings and got the win.

Kailyn Bearpaw picked up her team-leading 26th RBI of the season, tying the game with a single in the fifth. MacKenzie Denson had another multi-hit game and came around to score on Bearpaw's single.

Claira Skaggs had a sacrifice bunt but was especially impactful on the defensive end. She combined with Nash on a double play in the seventh, and an inning earlier the first baseman field a high hopper and dove to first to tag the base just before the South Florida runner could do the same.

The Bulls only managed three hits off Nash. Alexa Galligani had the most important, the winning double. She also had scored the earlier run off Jordyn Kadlub's groundout.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In yesterday's game, Tulsa failed to get a leadoff runner on. Denson ensured that would be the case Friday as she lined a single up the middle to open the game. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and third thanks to a passed ball. However, a pop up to the short stop left her stranded 60 feet from home.

The Bulls took the opening lead in the second inning. A walk and single put the first two runners on. That was the last hit Nash allowed until the eighth inning. A ground out moved both runners into scoring position with one out. The next batter hit a ground ball to short. Edwards chose to head home with the throw, but the runner was able to slide just in advance of the tag to give South Florida a 1-0 lead.

The lead stood until the fifth inning when Tulsa tied the game up, doing all the damage with two outs. Entering the frame, the Hurricane had not recorded a hit with a runner on base despite having at least one runner in each inning. This time, Denson singled to get on and then back-to-back singles from Imani Edwards and Bearpaw brought Denson home to tie the game.

The Hurricane drew a walk in the sixth, but the final nine batters were set down. South Florida had a base runner in the bottom of the seventh, but Nash and Claira Skaggs combined to turn a nice double play on a liner, ending the seventh and sending the game to extras.

A one out walk put a runner on for the Bulls in the bottom of the eighth. Nash forced a ground out that retired the second Bull while moving the potential winning run to second. Galligani, who had scored South Florida's lone run to this point, played the hero with a ground ball that found the gap between first and second and brought home the winning run.
