TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa women's soccer team is heating up at the right time as the Golden Hurricane decked the Florida Atlantic Owls 3-1 under sunny skies at the Hurricane Soccer Stadium Sunday. The 3-3 Hurricane (7-6-2 overall) moved up to sixth place in the American Athletic Conference standings while dropping the Owls to 2-8-3 and 1-3-1 in league action.

Tulsa got on the board first and never looked back as the Hurricane netted a goal by redshirt junior forward Hannah Chance in the 15th minute and second-half scores by junior midfielder Maggie SymSmith (penalty) and freshman forward Ady Bechtel. A late penalty by the Owls made it a 3-1 game when the final buzzer sounded.

"You don't get five-point weeks very often in this league," Head Coach Jim Rhein said. "We feel very fortunate after escaping UTSA on the road, where we didn't have our best game. Because we played on Thursday and Florida Atlantic didn't, we had an extra bit of fatigue that we had to fight through. And that's what we accomplished.

"When you look at our team, it's influenced by every class, especially the younger classes. The sophomores and freshmen have really stepped up. When you look at all the ways we've scored, we can't help but feel like the future is bright for us."

The Tulsa women will return to action a week from today to host Charlotte (1-7-6, 0-2-4 AAC) at the Hurricane Soccer Stadium at 1 p.m. on Oct. 20.

How it Happened
Tulsa had three shots and two corner kicks before F Hannah Chance fielded a contested dump-off from F Aniya Facen in the 15th minute, who met the ball in the air on a D Madison Williams corner kick. Chance took the shot with her left foot and sent the ball flying into the middle left of the net for the Hurricane's opening score.

The score at half read 1-0 in favor of the Hurricane. At the break, Tulsa had seven shots, three shots on goal and four corner kicks. FAU had four shots, three shots on goal and just one corner.

In the 49th minute, Tulsa drove the ball down the field and into the opponent's penalty area, where MF Ady Bechtel was fouled hard by the Owls' Morgan McDonald. MF Maggie SymSmith stepped up to take the penalty kick and delivered with a fast roller into the lower left corner of the net to put Tulsa up 2-0.

TU made it a 3-0 contest in the 60th minute when Bechtel received smart passes from forwards Hannah Chance and Blaine Schutte near the middle of the Owls' penalty area. She sent the ball on a right-footed laser toward the left side of the goal for her second score of the season.

Although FAU benefitted from a successful penalty kick resulting from a Tulsa yellow card in the Hurricane box in the 71st minute, the deficit was too much to overcome, and Tulsa ran away with the 3-1 victory.
