TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa men's soccer team went up against the nation's best defense in goals against average (.545) in Charlotte and up shy in a 1-0 loss under the lights at Hurricane Soccer Stadium Friday. The Golden Hurricane dropped to 2-8-3 and 1-3-1 in American Athletic Conference play while the 49ers moved into a first-place tie with Memphis at 3-1-1 in league action and 7-1-4 overall.
A sixth-minute goal by the '9ers was the only score between the two teams as Charlotte's tough defense held Tulsa to six first-half shots and none in the second.
The Tulsa men will travel to Tampa to face South Florida (5-3-4, 3-2-0 AAC) Saturday, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m. Then the Hurricane will host Temple (3-6-4, 0-2-2 AAC) for the regular season finale and Senior Night on Friday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m.
How it Happened
The Hurricane once again fell victim to an early goal as Charlotte's Brigham Larsen sent the ball into Tulsa's lower left corner on a slow roller in the 6th minute. A deep pass from midfield by Luke Huskiwshy to Ryan Dunn's crosser set up the only score of the night.
By halftime, Tulsa had six shots and two on goal, including a laser in the 49ers' penalty area by Gijs Hovius that was saved by Leo Stritter, the nation's third-best goalkeeper by goals against average (.545). Charlotte only had two shots through the first 45 minutes.
Tulsa didn't record a single shot in the second half due in part to the stingy 49er defense. The ball was shot only once by Charlotte on an attempt by Casey McCloskey that would have scored had the ball not rolled just left of the pole by a few inches. The defensive battle left a 1-0 score for the 49ers at full time.
