Miguel Makes it to Quarterfinals and Earns Spot at ITA Sectionals

Tulsa, Okla. – Golden Hurricane Men's Tennis hosted the ITA Central Regional Championships this past week at the Michael D. Case Tennis Complex. The Hurricane welcomed 12 teams from across the nation.
Standing out for the Hurricane was junior Luis Felipe Miguel as he was able to work his way to the quarterfinals before dropping a match to No. 89 Luis Carlos Alvarez Valdes (OU) 6-3, 7-5. An impressive run for the junior from Goiânia, Brazil as he defeated Benjamin Johnson (Drake) 6-1, 7-6 with a 7-3 decision. He also defeated Ange-Kevin Koua (UND) 6-1, 6-2 and Jakub Vrba (Ark) 7-5, 6-4.
Also having some success was Alex Okonkwo as he was able to advance to the Singles Round of 16 only losing to Oscar Lacides (OU) 7-5, 7-5 in that round. Okonkwo was undefeated across all sets only losing two sets to Lacides.
Junior Reiya Komagata was able to show promise through the Consolation bracket until coming toe to toe with Ian Bracks (OSU). Komagata was able to find points and earn himself a first-set victory but was unable to move himself through when he dropped the match 6-2, 1-6, 6-.
At the doubles end of the tournament, little success was found. Hurricane doubles partners Miguel/Pellegrini and partners Okonkwo/Komagata were unable to advance to the quarterfinals with both teams losing in the round of 16 in 8-3 and 8-4 decisions respectively.
The Hurricane men's tennis action continues Thursday, October 24th through Sunday, October 27th at the American Individual Championships in Houston, Texas.
