Tulsa Falls to Army 49-7

TULSA, Okla. –– The Army Black Knights made a big impression in its first-ever visit to H.A. Chapman Stadium with a 49-7 victory over Tulsa in front of 24,409 fans on a hot Saturday afternoon.
 
Army improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in its first season in the American Athletic Conference, while Tulsa fell to 2-4 and 0-2 in league play.
 
The nation's leading rushing team used its passing game early to establish a 21-7 halftime lead, while its ground game got going in the second half. Army passed for 140 first-half yards and got back to its normal offensive-style with 249 rushing yards in the second half.
 
After Tulsa knotted the score at 7-7 in the first quarter and held Army on their next possession, the Black Knights scored on their next six possessions, two in the second period, three in the third and one in the fourth quarter for what would be the eventual final score of 49-7.
 
The Black Knights ended the contest with 481 total yards including 321 on the ground and 160 through the air, while Tulsa was held to a season-low 268 yards. The Hurricane did control possession time by nearly 10 minutes, 34:29 to 25:31.
 
The game only took an elapsed time of 2:52 from kickoff until the final horn.
 
Reserve quarterback Cooper Legas led Tulsa in rushing with 81 yards and Tulsa's lone touchdown, while Kirk Francis completed 16-of-22 passes for 84 yards. Army's Kanye Udoh had a game-high 137 yards on the ground with two TDs, while Bryson Short completed all five of his passes for 140 yards while connecting on TD passes covering 37 and 58 yards.
 
The first quarter ended tied at 7-7 as Army scored on a 37-yard pass play on its first possession, while the Hurricane responded on a one-yard Legas touchdown to cap a 16-play, 75-yard drive.
 
Tulsa controlled the possession time in the first quarter, 10:25 to 4:35.
 
After Tulsa opened the second quarter taking the first 6:39 off the clock, the Black Knights held the Hurricane on a fourth down attempt and proceeded to march 70 yards in 3:26 as Bryson Daily ran the final four yards for the score and a 14-7 lead at the 5:02 mark.
 
Army took its next possession 68 yards in four plays to take a 21-7 lead with just 1:49 remaining before intermission
 
For the half, Army had a 212 to 176-yard edge in total offense, while Tulsa controlled possession time, 20:18 to 9:42. The West Point yardage came on 140 yards passing 72 on the ground, while Tulsa rushed for 92 yards and had 84 yards via the air.
 
The Black Knights took the second-half kickoff 75 yards in three plays as Kanye Udoh sprinted 61yards for a touchdown and a 28-7 lead with just 1:27 gone in the half.
 
It took the Knights only 0:50 and two plays to increase its lead to 28 points when Udoh again took the handoff down the middle of the field for 63 yards and a 35-7 lead, capping a two-play, 72-yard drive.
 
Army added its third straight touchdown run of the quarter for a 42-7 lead when Bryson Daily took it 27 yards with just 0:14 remaining in the third period. Reserve quarterback Dewayne Coleman's four-yard run capped a 49-yard, seven-play drive to go ahead 49-7 at the 7:40 mark of the final stanza for the game's final points.
 
Tulsa will have an open week next Saturday before traveling to Philadelphia to take on the Temple Owls on Oct. 19. Tulsa returns to Chapman Stadium for Homecoming against UTSA on Saturday, Oct. 26.
 
 
1st Quarter Breakdown
•       On the game's opening drive, Tulsa failed to convert a first down on 4th-and-5 from their own 39-yard line, giving Army the ball at the Tulsa 42.
•       The nation's No. 1-ranked rushing offense took just three plays to take a 7-0 lead with its TD coming on a 37-yard pass play.
•       Tulsa took the subsequent possession 75 yards in 16 plays as Cooper Legas ran in one yard for the touchdown and a tie game at 7-7
•       The Hurricane scoring drive saw QBs Kirk Francis and Cooper Legas both contribute to the scoring possession.
•       The first period ended with Tulsa holding an 84-74 edge in total offense … the Hurricane gained 43 yards pass and 41 yards on the ground compared to 34 rushing yards for Army and 40 passing yards.
 
2nd Quarter Breakdown
•       Tulsa took the first 6:39 off the second quarter clock but couldn't convert on a 4th-and-9 from the Army 33-yard line.
•     The Black Knights scored on their next two possessions, going 70 yards in just six plays for a 14-7 lead at the 5:02 mark and 68 yards in four plays with 1:49 remaining in the half for a 21-7 lead.
•     Tulsa controlled possession time in the first half, 20:18 to 9:42, but Army held a 212 to 176-yard edge in total offense.

3rd Quarter Breakdown
•       Army took the second-half kickoff 75 yards in three plays as Kanye Udoh sprinted 61 yards for a 28-7 lead.
•       Tulsa took the subsequent possession to the Army 28-yard line but was stopped on 4th-and-7, giving the ball back to the Cadets at the 7:34 mark.
•       On Army's next drive, Udoh again took the handoff down the middle of the field for a 63-yard run that but Army ahead 35-7.
•       Army added its third straight touchdown run of the quarter for a 42-7 lead when Bryson Daily took it 27 yards with just 0:14 remaining in the period.
•       After rushing for just 72 yards on 13 plays in the first half, Army totaled 151 yards on the ground on three third-quarter TD runs and ended the quarter with 200 rushing yards.
 
4th Quarter Breakdown
•       The lone touchdown of the quarter came from Army.
•       Reserve quarterback Dewayne Coleman's four-yard run capped a 49-yard, seven-play drive for a 49-7 Army lead at the 7:40 mark.
•       Army gained 69 fourth quarter yards, while Tulsa gained just 37 yards in the final period.
