
Tulsa Drops Road Game at Temple 20-10

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. –– The Golden Hurricane was unable to dig itself out of an early hole in a 20-10 loss to the Temple Owls in front of 18,721 fans at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday afternoon.
Temple improved to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the American Athletic Conference, while Tulsa fell to 2-5 and 0-3 in league play.
On its homecoming day the Owls jumped ahead to establish a 17-0 halftime lead as the Tulsa offense struggled to get going. The Hurricane accumulated just 88 yards of total offense in the first two quarters, while Temple amassed 242.
The Hurricane came out with a renewed energy in the third quarter, shutting down the Owls and scoring a touchdown and kicking a field goal on its two possessions to cut the deficit to 17-10 entering the fourth. Temple connected on another field goal to extend the lead to two scores at 20-10 early in the fourth, which would serve as the final score as Tulsa failed to respond.
The Owls finished with 397 yards of total offense, including 316 through the air and 81 on the ground, the lowest rushing total by a TU opponent this season. The Golden Hurricane amassed 245 yards, collecting 175 through the air and a season-low 75 on the ground.
Quarterback Kirk Francis was the second QB in the game for Tulsa on Saturday but led the Hurricane with 153 yards and a season-long 63-yard touchdown while connecting on 11-of-23 passes with an interception. Cooper Legas earned the start and had 17 yards through the air and 21 on the ground. Temple's Evan Simon was the game's leading passer, completing 30-of-46 attempts for 297 yards and a touchdown with one pick.
Graduate running back Anthony Watkins led Tulsa in rushing and receiving, picking up 23 yards on the ground and then as a receiver, most of which came on the 63-yard pass from Francis on Tulsa's first possession of the second half.
Tulsa was aggressive on its first drive, going for fourth-and-1 at the Temple 43, but were stopped short of the line to gain. Temple opened the scoring late in the first quarter with a 29-yard field goal to cap a 7-play, 87-yard drive. The 3-0 score would stand at the end of one.
Temple would score on back-to-back drives in the second quarter to grab all the momentum. Evan Simon took the Owls 53-yards in 10 plays in a drive that spanned the first two quarters, finding Peter Clarke for a touchdown to go ahead 10-0. On its ensuing drive, Temple marched 92 yards in 11 plays and 5:32 of clock time, ending with a 1-yard touchdown rush from Terrez Worthy to go ahead by the halftime score of 17-0.
Each team threw an interception in their final drives of the opening half, Francis was picked off a the Temple 48, and Jehlen Cannady intercepted Simon at the TU 20 on the last play of the half.
The Hurricane came out in the second half with a purpose stopping a Temple drive and getting the ball at its own 12. From there, Tulsa took it 88 yards in just three plays, highlighted by a 63-yard touchdown pass from Francis to Watkins on a wheel route to get Tulsa on the board 17-7.
After forcing a three-and-out, TU was again on the attack, going 50 yards in nine plays before settling for a season-long 46-yard field goal from Seth Morgan to cut further into the deficit 17-10.
Tulsa outgained Temple 103-66 in the third quarter, which was the most productive for the Hurricane.
Temple responded to end the third and open the fourth with a long 14-play, 59-yard drive that also ended with three points. Maddux Trujillo connected from 41 yards for his second field goal of the afternoon and a 20-10 lead that would serve as the final.
Tulsa punted on its next possession. The following TU drive was ended after two plays on a strip sack inside Temple territory. Tulsa's final drive of the game ended in a turnover on downs after penalties and sacks left the Hurricane in a fourth-and-29 situation, and TU failed to convert.
The Owls took over possession at midfield with 2:40 on the clock and were able to pick up a couple of first downs and then kneel out the game.
Tulsa returns home next Saturday, Oct. 26, to host UTSA at H.A. Chapman Stadium for Homecoming.
