Periman's Career Day Pushes Tulsa to 89-61 Victory Over Kansas City
12/15/2024 7:05:00 PM | Women's Basketball
TULSA, Okla. — Junior Hadley Periman was one of five starters to eclipse 10 or more points for an 89-61 home win over Kansas City Sunday, dominating the Roos on both sides of the ball with a career-high 20 points to go with 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. The Golden Hurricane evened up their record at 5-5 with a third consecutive victory while dropping Kansas City to 3-9 on the year.
Joining the guard/forward hybrid in double-figure scoring territory was redshirt junior Paige Bradley (15), sophomore Mady Cartwright (12), senior Delanie Crawford (12) and sophomore Elise Hill (11). History repeated itself as all five starters in the last matchup between Tulsa and Kansas City on Nov. 18, 2017, also scored in double-digits with that game ending in a 76-52 home win for the Hurricane.
It was the second consecutive game that Tulsa led wire-to-wire as the Hurricane put together a complete game by scoring over 20 points per quarter, never faltering to a Kansas City team that peaked with 19 points in the third quarter and couldn't keep up with the surging Hurricane at any point in the contest.
The Hurricane scored well from multiple levels, dominating the paint with 48 points and landing 10 three-pointers, three of which came from Periman and another three from Hill.
TU shot 53.6% from the field on a 37-69 mark, including a 10-19 tally from three for 52.6% deep-ball shooting, to go with 5-8 free throws made. The defense held the Roos to 38.5% in field goals (25-65), just 18.8% in treys (3-16) and 72.7% in free throws (8-11).
A major factor in the Hurricane's successful shooting day was 25 team assists, the most recorded by Tulsa since Dec. 11, 2022, against Central Arkansas (25 assists). Crawford paced the floor with seven assists with Hill coming away with five and senior Kristol Ayson having four.
"I'm really proud of our team today," Head Coach Angie Nelp said. "We had multiple players in double-figures. One of the most fun things about this game was the number of assists that we had and the way that we found each other. You can see that our rhythm together as a team is certainly growing. Another thing we've been really proud of recently is we've really taken on the challenge of being a better rebounding team. We won the rebounds today. Hadley was a big part of that. She had her first double-double, and she was able to do so many things for us defensively and then come through in so many different ways offensively. Multiple players were contributing today. It was a great team win. I really love our teamwork and toughness and what we displayed today, we defended without fouling, which has been a big goal for us, and so defensively, I feel like we're continuing to grow as a team and do those things that are needed for us to be successful."
After missing a few games with injury this season, Periman spent just over 32 minutes on the court Sunday to help Tulsa achieve the win with one of the best performances of her career.
"I know I had to take on a bigger role this year as one of the returners from last year," said Periman. "It's been tough missing some time, but that makes me even more eager when I get to get back out there and just give it my all for my team.
"We've had a tough nonconference schedule. Despite our record, once we start conference play, that does not matter at all and it's anybody's game. We're making sure the team knows that it's not where we start but how we finish. We see the growth from our first game to now and just continue to grow every game. And going into conference I feel really good about where we are now and the growth that we will continue to have."
Kansas City was led by Alayna Contreras, who had 22 points off 10-25 shooting. Her teammate Kelby Bannerman recorded 10 points and paced the Roos with eight rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST QUARTER . . .
Neither team got on the board until the 7:39 mark of the first quarter when Mady Cartwright drained a three-pointer. From there, the shots started falling through the net for TU as the Hurricane had a game-high 27 points, leading by as much as 14 points as the quarter ended.
Hadley Periman scored 12 of her 20 points in the first quarter off 4-6 field goals made and 3-4 three-pointers.
Tulsa's stingy defense held Kansas City to 0-7 shooting to start the game.
IN THE SECOND QUARTER . . .
Elise Hill spent all 10 minutes of the second quarter on the court and led with six points off a pair of three-pointers. Six Hurricane would get on the board for points as well.
Tulsa capitalized well off of Kansas City turnovers, scoring 10 of its 20 points in the frame off of errors. TU led by as much as 19 at 34-15 with 8:05 on the clock before closing out the half on top 47-30. Hill made a half-court three-pointer at the buzzer, but the call was reversed upon close inspection of the replay.
At the half, Tulsa was 54.5% from the field (18-33), 72.7% in threes (8-11) and 75% in free throws (3-4), while the Roos were 36.4% in field goals (12-33), 16.7% from deep (2-12) and 80% at the line (4-5).
IN THE THIRD QUARTER . . .
16 of Tulsa's 20 third-quarter points came from the paint, with Paige Bradley leading the squad with six points off 3-6 shooting. She and Periman each had four rebounds in the period.
Tulsa extended its lead to as large as 24 points at 58-34 when Bradley put away a fast-break layup at 6:15 in the quarter.
The Roos had their best effort of the game in the third quarter, putting up 19 points off 9-20 shooting. Tulsa put up 20 in the quarter, heading into the fourth with a 67-49 lead.
IN THE FOURTH QUARTER . . .
Kansas City ran out of steam when they were held to just 4-12 field goal shooting for 12 points.
Delanie Crawford got into double-digit territory with five points in the quarter, just one shy of Periman's leading effort of six. Kennedi Alexander scored two points and finished the game with eight points.
TU dominated the paint once more with 14 points and held the Roos to just four close-range points. The Hurricane's bench got some extra time on the court and combined for nine points to close out the game 89-61 for Tulsa.
