TULSA, Okla. –– After the Thanksgiving break, the University of Tulsa men's basketball team is back in the Donald W. Reynolds Center to host in-state rival Oklahoma State on Wednesday evening.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and will air on ESPN+ with Chad McKee and former star Tulsa point guard Pooh Williamson on the call. Fans can also catch the contest on Big Country 99.5 FM and the Varsity Network app. Bruce Howard and JR Rollo will bring fans the action.
Wednesday marks the 116th meeting between the Golden Hurricane and Cowboys, with Oklahoma State leading the all-time series 76-39. This is the third of a three-game series against OSU. The Cowboys won the opener two seasons ago in Gallagher-Iba Arena, and then again 72-57 in the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City last season. Tulsa is 2-1 in games played in the Reynolds Center against OSU, including a 74-71 win in the last meeting in 2018.
Both teams are coming off losses in their previous games. For Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane fell on a last-second shot and foul 74-71 against Georgia State in the finale of the Jacksonville Classic in Florida. The Hurricane had defeated Detroit Mercy 63-44 the previous day. Oklahoma State went 1-2 at the Charleston Classic in South Carolina, sandwiching a win over Miami between losses to FAU and Nevada.
Graduate guard Dwon Odom is second on the team in scoring at 13.1 points per game after earning his way into the starting lineup with Loyola Chicago. Odom recorded his first double-double at Tulsa with 16 points and 11 rebounds against his old team Georgia State, and he added seven assists as well. This came after an 11-point, eight-rebound and six-assist game in the win over Detroit Mercy.
Keaston Willis leads the team in scoring at 13.5 points per game and was TU's top scorer in both games of the classic with 15 and 18. Braeden Carrington paces Tulsa in rebounding, pulling down 5.4 per game, which is only 0.1 above Odom.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Steve Lutz, the Cowboys rattled off three straight wins over Green Bay, St. Thomas and Southern Illinois to open his tenure before the Charleston Classic. Marchelus Avery leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.3 points per contest. Tulsa native Bryce Thompson is recording a career-best 12.2 points per game and recently became the 45th OSU player to score 1,000 career points at the school. The final Cowboy in double-figure scoring is Abou Ousmane at 12.0 per game.
Following Wednesday's contest, the Golden Hurricane will host Southern University on Saturday before another week off leading into the Orange Bowl Classic against UCF on December 14. Tipoff against Southern is set for 2 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
