Tulsa Falls to OSU 76-55

TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa fell to the visiting Oklahoma State Cowboys 76-55 Wednesday night in front of 4,500 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
The Cowboys built a halftime lead of 13 points and increased its advantage to as many as 26 points in the second half.
OSU converted 49 percent of its field goals for the game, while Tulsa managed just 36 percent. The Cowboys scored 23 of their 30 field goals on either layups or dunks and made 3-of-8 three pointers, while the Hurricane connected on just 5-of-24 from three-point range.
The Cowboys scored 48 points in the paint and had 17 fast-break points while scoring 32 points off 22 Tulsa turnovers.
Dwon Odom led the Hurricane with 12 points followed by Braeden Carrington's nine points and Tyshawn Archie and Isaiah Barnes eight each. OSU's Bryce Thompson led four Cowboys in double-figures with 15 points.
In the first half, the game was tied at 15 with 7:50 on the clock when OSU went on a 24-11 run the remainder of the first 20 minutes for a 39-26 halftime lead. The Cowboys outscored Tulsa 14-5 in the final four minutes of the including an 8-0 run to close out the half for its 13-point halftime advantage.
OSU shot 55.2 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes compared to Tulsa's 39.1 percent as both teams struggled from the free throw lines shooting under 65 percent. Of OSU's 16 first-half baskets, 12 came on layups or dunks.
Dwon Odom, Tyshawn Archie and Braeden Carrington each had six first-half points to lead the Hurricane.
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST HALF…
Tulsa jumped out to a 4-0 lead on a Dwon Odom layup and a jumper by Tyshawn Archie at the 18:36 mark.
With OSU leading 7-6, both teams went on long scoreless streaks … the Cowboys did not score for 3:08 … Marchelus Avery layup at the 12:34 mark ended the scoreless streak … Tulsa's scoreless streak reached more than five minutes but ended with Ian Smikle's free throw at the 11:17 mark to cut Tulsa's deficit to 11-7.
Smikle's free throw began a 6-0 run to put the Hurricane ahead 12-11 at the 10:02 mark.
Tulsa took a 15-13 lead on a second straight Braeden Carington three-pointer before OSU evened the score at 15 with 7:50 left on the first half clock.
Tulsa retook the lead at 17-15 on two Jesaiah McWright free throws with 7:26 remaining in the half.
But the Cowboys closed out the first half on a 24-9 run and scored the final eight points for a 39-26 halftime lead.
OSU shot 55.2 percent from the field compared to Tulsa's 39.1 percent as both teams struggled from the free throw lines shooting under 65 percent.
Twelve of OSU's 16 first-half baskets came on layups or dunks, while Tulsa had three in the first half.
IN THE SECOND HALF …
Braden Carrington's three-pointer in the opening minute of the second half cut Tulsa's deficit to 10 points at 39-29.
OSU pushed its lead back to 13 points before Tulsa got it down to 10 again on a Dwon Odom layup to make the score 47-37 with 11:52 to play.
Tulsa wouldn't get any closer the remainder of the half as the Cowboys pushed its lead to as many as 26 points at the 2:53 mark.
The Cowboys continued its dominance in the paint with 11baskets coming on layups or dunks in the second half.
GAME NOTES
• This was the 116th meeting between Tulsa and Oklahoma State and the first in Tulsa since the 2018 season.
• OSU now leads the series 77-39.
• Dwon Odom had his 8th double-digit scoring game of the season and the 53rd of his collegiate career.
• This was the second of nine games this year that Tulsa had just one double-digit scorer.
• Tulsa is now 0-5 on the year when trailing at halftime.
