Southern Holds off Tulsa 70-66

12/7/2024 7:53:00 PM | Men's Basketball

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa men's basketball team stayed with Southern University for most of Saturday afternoon's contest but ultimately fell short 70-66 in the Donald W. Reynold Center.

Southern's largest lead was just seven, midway through the opening half, but every time the Golden Hurricane got within a possession, tied the game or even took the lead, the Jaguars quickly responded. In all there were five ties and three lead changes, two of each in the second half.

Tulsa converted on 41.2 percent of its field goals while Southern knocked down 37.1 percent from the field. The Hurricane also made 8-of-26 from 3-point range (30.8 percent), while Southern was 3-of-14 (21.4).

One of the nation's best teams off the bench, Southern reserves scored 48 points while Tulsa got 26, 23 of which came from the game's high scorer Keaston Willis. The Jaguars held a 40-26 advantage in the paint and held an 18-8 margin in second chance points.

Tyshawn Archie recorded 17 points while Ian Smikle added a career-best 11 points to go with his eight rebounds. Willis had seven rebounds, while Dwon Odom and Archie each had four assists in the loss.

Michael Jacobs came off the bench to lead the Jaguars with 19 points, including four straight clutch free throws to ice the game in the final 30 seconds. DaMariee Jones and Derrick Tezeno each scored 10 to round out the double figure scorers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST HALF…
In the first half, it was a slow start with Dwon Odom not opening the scoring until a 16:57 jumper to put Tulsa ahead 2-0. Tulsa held a 7-5 lead with 14:42 on the clock when Southern rattled off eight straight to take a 13-7 advantage, a lead the Jaguars would not relinquish in the opening half.

The Southern lead bloomed to seven twice, the latest at 5:47 in the half with the Jagurs ahead 22-15. Tyshawn Archie knocked down a pair if 3-pointers to sandwich a pair of Southern free throws and cut the lead to three. Then, Keaston Willis connected on 1-of-2 at the foul line before the Jaguars responded with a 3-pointer to get the lead back to five. After another SU free throw, Archie knocked down a layup to get the score to 28-24 at the half.

The teams were pretty even in the first half with Tulsa shooting 34.6 percent and Southern 32.4 percent. The Hurricane hit four triples while Southern connected twice.

IN THE SECOND HALF …
Southern extended its lead to six with the first field goal of the second half before Tulsa went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead 31-30 at the 17:52 mark. Willis scored six of TU's points in the stretch on 3-pointers with an Ian Smikle free throw in between.

The Jaguars responded with six straight points of their own to retake the lead 36-31. TU would get the deficit down to one on two occasions before using a 5-0 run to push the lead back to its highest, 45-38 with just over 12 minutes remaining.

The Hurricane quickly retied the game in 1:19 of game time. An Odom layup was followed by another 3-pointer from Willis and then a Justin Amadi fast break layup. Archie assisted on the final two field goals as Tulsa tied the game at 45.

Again, Southern responded and did not allow the Hurricane to take the lead or grab momentum, this time for good. The Jaguars shot 11-of-11 from the foul line in the final seven minutes to aid in keeping the Hurricane at bay.

For its part, Tulsa got the deficit to a single possession seven times in that same stretch and either failed to get a stop or was unable to convert on a crucial possession when needed.

After a pair of Willis free throws got the lead down to two, 68-66, with eight seconds remaining, TU was forced to foul. As he had done on the previous possession and as the Jaguars did on 17-of-19 opportunities in the second half, he hit the free throws to give Southern the 70-66 final.
