Tulsa Softball Back in Action at TXST Tournament

TULSA, Okla. –– The Tulsa softball team began the 2024 season last weekend with back-to-back nine-run wins before falling in two games to the nation's 24th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies.
Tulsa takes its 2-2 record to the Texas State Tournament in San Marcos, Texas, this Friday-Sunday, Feb. 16-18.
The Golden Hurricane will begin Friday's action with two straight games, coming against Northern Colorado at 11 a.m. and host Texas State at 1:30 p.m. On Saturday, Tulsa will square off against Texas Tech at 10 a.m. and will face Texas State again at 2:30 p.m.
Tulsa closes out tournament action on Sunday at noon against Sam Houston State.
Tulsa and Northern Colorado will be facing off for the second time in school history with the Bears capturing the first meeting in 2015. Texas State has a 7-4 series advantage, while Tulsa leads the Texas Tech series 10-5 and has an 8-2 mark against Sam Houston State.
In the opening weekend, Tulsa batted .315 as a team while holding the opposition to a four-game .256 batting average. Second baseman Abby Jones had a team-high .545 batting average with six hits and three RBI, followed by outfielders MacKenzie Denson and Kailyn Bearpaw hitting .417 and .400, respectively.
Shortstop Imani Edwards (.357) and centerfielder Haley Morgan (.333) batted over .300 in their first four games as well. Starting catcher Emma Vickrey batted .500 in just one game played last weekend.
On the mound, Maura Moore and Kylee Nash each picked up a victory in their first outings of the season.
Northern Colorado and Texas State are coming off NCAA Tournament appearances last year, as UNC won the Big Sky Championship and Texas State earned an at-large bid. The Bears had a 26-23 record and the Bobcats recorded a 35-25-1 mark.
UNC comes into the Tulsa game with a 1-3 record after opening the season at the University of Arizona's Candrea Classic. Texas State posted a 5-1 mark in its first of two home tournaments a week ago, grabbing wins over UTSA, Northwestern State, Kennesaw State, Southern Illinois and Creighton.
Texas Tech is 3-2 and Sam Houston State has an 0-2 record after the opening weekend of play. Tech played in the Florida State Tournament and Sam Houston hosted its own Bearkat Classic.
