Tulsa Splits Games in Day Two of TXST Tournament

2/17/2024 7:56:00 PM | Softball

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The University of Tulsa softball team started the day with a narrow 3-2 loss to Texas Tech before bouncing back to knock off Texas State 3-1 in day two action of the TXST Tournament.

The Hurricane (5-3, 0-0 AAC) is 3-1 on the weekend after recording an 11-5 win over Northern Colorado and a 5-2 victory over Texas State in the weekend's first games on Friday. Texas Tech finished the day 6-2 after nabbing a second win over Texas State. The Bobcats bring a 7-5 record into the final day of the competition.

Both of Tulsa's games on Saturday featured good defense and pitching, with no runs until the sixth inning of game one, and the fourth of the second game. Anneca Anderson (2-0) performed well in her second week of collegiate action, going the distance in the win over Texas State. She struck out eight and allowed just one run on four hits.

Maura Moore (2-2) also put in a strong shift with a difficult sixth inning blemishing an otherwise stellar outing. Three of the five hits she allowed, and all three runs, occurred in the sixth. Kylee Nash came in to pitch the final two innings, allowing no hits and striking out a pair.

Haley Morgan, MacKenzie Denson, Imani Edwards and Maci Cole all had multiple hits on the day. Edwards, Kailyn Bearpaw, Celeste Wood, Claira Skaggs and Abby Jones each recorded an RBI during the day.

GAME 1 – TEXAS TECH 3, TULSA 2
It was a pitcher's dual in the Saturday opener, with neither team able to get much going off the opposing starter. Texas Tech recorded the first hit in the game in the third inning after going down in order in the first two. For the Hurricane, TU didn't get its first hit until an Imani Edwards single in the fourth.

Maura Moore struck out five batters in the opening four innings while allowing just two hits through five. Texas Tech's Maddy Wright would go the distance, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out four.

The Red Raiders broke the deadlock in the sixth. Consecutive singles and a walked batter loaded the bases with nobody out. Texas Tech then cleared the bases with a three-run double, ending Moore's morning. She departed with three runs, all earned, five hits and five strikeouts in her five innings of work. Kylee Nash entered the circle to try to get out of the inning with no further damage. Tech loaded the bags again with one out, but Claira Skaggs collected a ground ball and went home with the throw to stop another run from scoring. A fly out ended the threat.

Haley Morgan got Tulsa started in the bottom of the frame with a single up the middle. MacKenzie Denson reached on an error from the third baseman, which allowed her to move up to second and Morgan to third. After a ground out, Kailyn Bearpaw delivered a big single to right, scoring Morgan and putting Denson on third. Unfortunately, a twin-killing ended Tulsa's opportunity to cut further into the lead.

After Nash set the Red Raiders down in order in the seventh, the Hurricane had one last chance. A one-out Maci Cole double gave Tulsa some life, which was emboldened as Celeste Wood followed with a double of her own to make it 3-2. Nash moved her to third on a ground out and Morgan was intentionally walked, bringing up Denson. She hit a hard liner, but it was snagged by the third baseman to end the game.

GAME 2 – TULSA 3, TEXAS STATE 2
Just like in game one, runs were at a premium in Tulsa's afternoon game. The Bobcats threatened in the bottom of the opening inning, getting runners on second and third with nobody out. But freshman Anneca Anderson got the next three runners out with no damage done.

The hosts got another single in the third, but Tulsa was the first to put a tally in the runs section with a big fourth inning. Haley Morgan got Tulsa's first hit of the afternoon, followed swifty by an infield single from MacKenzie Denson. Imani Edwards made it three straight singles, scoring Morgan from second to put Tulsa up 1-0.

After an out was recorded, Claira Skaggs singled down the line in right to score Denson. Abby Jones grounded into a fielder's choice, which allowed Edwards to score and put Tulsa up 3-0.

That was all Anderson would need. The pitcher struck out three straight Bobcats in the bottom of the fourth to strand two. Texas State got on the board in the fifth, taking advantage of a Tulsa error after a single. After getting through the fifth, Anderson had relatively clean innings in the sixth and seventh, allowing one base runner in each but no hits.

Anderson tossed seven complete innings with only one run on four hits with three walks and eight batters struck out.
