LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Golden Hurricane softball team completed a successful trip to Las Vegas with a 4-2 win over the hosting UNLV Rebels on Sunday afternoon in Eller Media Stadium.
The Hurricane (9-5, 0-0 AAC) finished 4-1 over the weekend with a pair of wins against UNLV and one win each over Santa Clara and Southern Utah. UNLV (6-7, 0-0 MWC) finishes 2-3 for the second week in a row in a home tournament.
Anneca Anderson (3-0) got the start for Tulsa and pitched a gem, collecting her second complete game of the season. Over seven innings of work, the freshman hurler allowed just two runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Two of those walks came with two out in the seventh before she settled down to get the final out.
Senior shortstop Imani Edwards was the lone player on either side with a multi-hit and multi-RBI game. Edwards drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to right in the first inning. She gave Tulsa some much-needed breathing room in the fifth with a leadoff home run over the wall in right center, her first of the season, to put Tulsa ahead 4-2, which stood as the final score.
Celeste Wood added a double for the Hurricane as she'd go on to score a run. Haley Morgan was hit by a pitch twice, the second time driving in a run, while MacKenzie Denson scored the opening run of the game after leading off with a walk. Claria Skaggs scored in the first thanks to aggressive base running. She saw a ball sail over the first baseman's head on a throw across the diamond, and she never stopped running, scoring all the way from first.
GAME 1 – TULSA 4, UNLV 2
As the Golden Hurricane had done multiple times throughout the weekend, Tulsa jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first. MacKenzie Denson drew a leadoff walk and Haley Morgan was hit by a pitch. A double steal had both runners in scoring position with nobody out. Denson would score on Imani Edward's sacrifice fly, beating a throw from right for the first run of the game. Later in the inning after Morgan was thrown out on a fielder's choice, leaving Claira Skaggs at first with two outs, Kennedy Cramer hit a hard ground ball to third. The third baseman launched her throw over the first baseman's head and Skaggs kept running all the way around to score from first, giving TU a 2-0 lead.
Tulsa added to its lead in the second. Celeste Wood doubled with one out. Maci Cole walked and everyone was safe on a Denson fielder's choice, bringing in Morgan. She worked a 2-2 count and then for the second time in the ballgame was hit by a pitch, bringing in a third run.
UNLV's only runs of the game came in the third inning. A leadoff double got the Rebels going. Then, a single with one away drove in a run to make it 3-1. The batter advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt for the second out of the frame. Then, a wild pitch got away from everyone, allowing the run to score all the way from second to cut the Tulsa lead to 3-2.
Edwards gave Tulsa some breathing room in the top of the fifth. The shortstop stepped up to lead off the frame and promptly smashed her first home run of the season, a solo shot to right as the Hurricane went ahead 4-2.
Anneca Anderson kept the hosts quiet in the fifth and sixth innings and then stepped up to earn the complete game in the seventh. The freshman got the first two batters to ground out, but then walked the next two on nine pitches to put the tying run on. Anderson battled with the final batter, forcing a ground ball to Claira Skaggs at third, who collected and beat the runner to third to secure the win.
