Former Tulsa Basketball Star Taleya Mayberry Recognized on National Girls & Women in Sports Day

TULSA, Okla. –– NGWSD is an annual day of observance held during the first week of February to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, recognize the influence of sports participation for women and girls, and honor the progress exhibited by women in sports.
 
Each year, TU celebrates the extraordinary achievements of women and girls in sports. Tulsa recognizes a female with local ties who has been influential for her support of or involvement in sports.

This year's honoree is former TU basketball standout Taleya Mayberry, a Tulsa native and graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. Mayberry was recognized at halftime of Sunday's Tulsa-North Texas women's basketball game.
 
Mayberry was a four-year starter for the Golden Hurricane from 2009 to 2013. She completed her collegiate playing career ranked second on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,752 points, while also ranking among the top-5 for field goals made (596), 3-pointers made (159), free throws made (391), assists (377) and steals (269). Mayberry had 86 career double-figure scoring games and averaged 15.2 points.
 
As a senior, Mayberry led Tulsa to four postseason conference tournament victories en route to winning the Conference USA Championship at the BOK Center, thus earning Tournament MVP honors. In the NCAA Tournament first round game, Mayberry tallied 18 points, four assists, three steals and three-rebounds against No. 4-ranked Stanford.
 
Mayberry finished her senior season with an 18.7 scoring average, while pulling down 4.1 rebounds and dishing out 3.6 assists
 
Following her graduation in 2013, Mayberry played professional basketball in China, Germany, Bulgaria and Iceland over a three-year period. Upon her return, she served as a graduate assistant coach at Oral Roberts University for one year.
 
Mayberry returned to her alma mater as an assistant women's basketball coach in 2018 and spent three years on the coaching staff. Currently, Mayberry spends time as broadcast color analyst on Golden Hurricane women's basketball games televised on ESPN+.
 
Past recipients include Emily Barkley, Union HS athletic director; Aimee Creger, Tulsa All-America softball pitcher; Becky Dixon, sports broadcasting pioneer; Jan Drummond, TU professor; Pat Hardin, strong supporter of TU athletics and women's sports; Marjorie Lewis, sportswriter; Dale McNamara, Tulsa's legendary women's golf coach, Crista Troester, Tulsa's executive senior associate athletic director/SWA; Alicia Conner-Todd, former women's basketball player and a lifetime member of Tulsa's Letterwinner's Association; and Stephanie Hall, longtime TU athletic communications staff member.
