Golden Hurricane Sweeps Home Openers at TU/OSU Invite

TULSA, Okla. – The Golden Hurricane softball team finally got to play at home and celebrated with two run-rule wins on Saturday at the Collins Family Softball Complex. Tulsa opened with a 12-3 win over Seattle in five innings and closed by beating Drake 11-3 in six innings.
The Hurricane moved to 11-6, 0-0 The American on the season, while Seattle fell to 7-12 after its two losses on Saturday. Drake split its action in the first day of games in Tulsa and ended the evening with an 8-6 record.
The Golden Hurricane smashed five home runs on Saturday. Haley Morgan and Kailyn Bearpaw recorded their first longballs of the season in the win over Seattle, while Maci Cole, Imani Edwards and Abby Jones each hit their second of the season in the nightcap win against Drake.
Edwards nearly had a cycle in the second game, finishing a triple short. She and Bearpaw combined to drive in seven runs in the win. Bearpaw finished the day with five RBIs, leading all batters. Edwards and Jones each had four, and Morgan and Maci Cole added three.
In the circle, Anneca Anderson (4-0) picked up the win in game one, spinning 3.1 innings of two-run softball. She allowed five hits and struck out six, but did walk four. Kylee Nash came in to pitch the final inning and two-thirds, allowing a run on one hit.
Maura Moore earned the start in game two, going 2.0 innings and allowing seven hits and three runs, all earned. She struck out four before passing the ball to Nash (3-2), who made her second appearance of the day and got the win. Nash pitched the final four innings and allowed only one hit and one other runner on a walk. She struck out three.
GAME 1: TULSA 12, SEATTLE 3
After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Hurricane blew the game open in the bottom of the second. Kennedy Cramer was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. A Kailyn Bearpaw single advanced her to second, and then she scored on a Celeste Wood single to make it 1-0. Maci Cole kept the line moving with an RBI single, followed by MacKenzie Denson, who bunted for Tulsa's fourth-straight single, which brought home Wood to give Tulsa a 3-0 lead.
In stepped senior center fielder Haley Morgan with two on and nobody out. Morgan smashed a no-doubter to left, giving Tulsa a 6-0 lead on her first home run of the season. TU wasn't done yet, with Imani Edwards picking up a hit and stealing second. Claira Skaggs singled up the middle driving in Edwards to go up 7-0, though Skaggs was thrown out trying to stretch for second.
Seattle loaded the bases in the second and third innings bailed to score. The Redhawks finally broke through when they loaded them a third time in the fourth. A groundout to third scored one run, and then an RBI single cut the Tulsa lead to 7-2.
The Hurricane again jumped all over the Seattle pitching in the bottom of the inning, After Morgan drew a walk, Edwards was able to reach safely to get two on with nobody out. Skaggs was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Abby Jones, who has had the hot bat for the Hurricane so far this season. Jones doubled to the gap in left, driving in all three runners on base to put Tulsa ahead 10-2. Bearpaw gave Tulsa more insurance with a two-run home run as the Hurricane lead extended to 12-2.
Seattle scored a run in the top of the fifth and had a pair of runners in scoring position with an opportunity to extend the game. But a ground out to short ended the threat and the contest.

The Bulldogs started the evening contest with a bang. The first pitch from Maura Moore quickly left the yard and Drake led 1-0.
Tulsa didn't take long to respond. MacKenzie Denson walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Haley Morgan laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her to third, which set up Imani Edwards' RBI double. However, the next two TU batters were retired, and Edwards was stranded.
The Bulldogs got its lead back in the top of the second. Consecutive singles and a sacrifice bunt had two runners in scoring position. Moore got a strikeout for the second out, but then a single to left scored one run to put Drake back up 2-1. The next batter was sent down looking.
Drake extended its lead with a leadoff home run in the third. After another single and a hit batter, Kylee Nash came in the game for the Hurricane. Joining her was catcher Maci Cole in relief of Emma Vickrey behind the plate. Nash struck out the first batter she saw for out one. Then, Cole connected with Claira Skaggs to catch runners attempting to steal third on back-to-back plays, helping Tulsa get out of the inning with no further damage. The Bulldogs wouldn't score again.
Abby Jones led the bottom of the fourth inning with a home run, her second of the season. The solo shot got Tulsa within a run at 3-2.
The Hurricane's big fifth inning started with a ground out. Tulsa got consecutive singles from Denson and Morgan before Edwards homered to right to put Tulsa up 5-3. Skaggs kept the rally going with a single to chase the starter from the circle, and then Jones doubled to right, getting both in scoring position. Bearpaw singled with two outs, scoring Jones and Skaggs and giving Tulsa a 7-3 lead. Cole followed with a two-run shot of her own to extend the advantage to 9-3.
The Hurricane entered the bottom of the sixth needing two runs to end the game, and Edwards got right to work with a single. She then stole second and scored on a Skaggs RBI double that came inches away from ending the game on its own after it bounced off the very top of the wall. Jones reached on a fielder's choice after the Bulldogs got the out at third. She then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Bearpaw grounded into a fielder's choice as the Drake second baseman attempted to go home to keep the game alive, but Jones beat the throw to walk-off the Bulldogs.
