ATLANTA, Ga. — University of Tulsa juniors Delanie Crawford and Temira Poindexter have been named Region 3 finalists for the 2024 WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America team, announced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Tuesday.
Fifty-two of the nation's best women's basketball players comprise this year's pool of finalists, which are broken down into groups of five regions. Crawford and Poindexter are two of 11 players in Region 3, which includes athletes from BYU, Florida Gulf Coast, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Texas. The Tulsa duo are the first players since Hurricane Hall-of-Famer Jillian Robbins (All-Region IV, 2007) to be named finalists for WBCA Coaches' All-America. Before Crawford and Poindexter, only Robbins and Allison Curtin (All-District V, 2003) have been finalists for the WBCA's top honor.
WBCA member coaches vote for the top eight players in their respective regions from among those players who are nominated. The WBCA NCAA Division I Awards Committee, which is composed of head coaches from each region elected by their peers, may select up to 12 additional at-large finalists from the remaining pool of nominees. The official WBCA Coaches' All-America team will feature 10 players and be released on April 4.
A 5'10" guard from Piedmont, Okla., Crawford has been consistent in her 34 starts for the Hurricane this season, not only scoring 19.0 points per game to rank second on the team, third in The American and 38th in the country, but the junior has done it efficiently with a .438 field goal percentage, a .392 mark from three-point range and an .834 percentage from the charity stripe. She paces the Hurricane with 50 assists at 1.5 per game while also pulling down 5.4 boards per contest.
Crawford has been a sharpshooter all season having knocked down 94 three-pointers—a new single-season program record and currently the seventh highest mark nationwide. She took home second team all-conference honors and was named The American's Most Improved Player of the Year having nearly doubled her point total from 334 last year to 648 this season.
A 6'1" forward from nearby Sapulpa, Okla., Poindexter has cemented the greatest scoring season ever by a Tulsa player with 715 points and counting, many of which have resulted from a school-record 256 field goals. Poindexter has reached double-figure points in all 34 starts, 20 or more points in 21 games and 30 or more points six times.
In averaging 21 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, Poindexter became the first Tulsa player to bring home American Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors. As a multi-level scorer, Poindexter ranks seventh in the nation for points (715), 13th for field goals made (256), 15th for points per game (21.0) and 23rd for three-pointers (84).
Crawford and Poindexter have made one formidable tandem for TU. The duo has combined to average 40 points per game for 56.3-percent of Tulsa's total points. They have become the first pair of Tulsa players in the same season with multiple 30+ scoring games, including six for Poindexter and three for Crawford. They have also combined for 36 20+ scoring games this season. In addition, Poindexter and Crawford became the 12th and 13th players in school history to reach 1,000 career points in just their junior seasons.
The tandem has totaled 55.3-percent of Tulsa's field goals made, 58.3-percent of the team's treys and 58.9-percent from the free throw line. They have also combined for 29.0-percent of Tulsa's rebounds and 33.4-percent of Tulsa's assists.
