4/20/2024 7:07:00 PM | Softball
CHARLOTTE, N.C – The Golden Hurricane never got going offensively on Saturday as Tulsa fell 4-1 and 5-2 in a doubleheader at Charlotte inside Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium.
Tulsa drops to 27-18 (12-9 The American) on the season after failing to win a game over the weekend. Charlotte improves to 29-16 (15-6 The American) and picks up its third conference sweep of the year.
Anneca Anderson (7-5) and Alexa Hopkins (1-4) were the pitchers of record for Tulsa. Anderson got the nod in game one, tossing 3.0 innings and allowing two runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts. Junior Maura Moore took the circle for game two, tossing 4.2 innings and giving up a pair of runs on three hits. Hopkins came on in relief in the second game and went two-thirds of an inning and was responsible for a pair of runs. Kylee Nash featured in relief of both contests. In game one, she went 3.0 innings with two runs on three hits, none earned, and a strikeout. She gave up another unearned run in her 0.2 innings of work in the second game.
Imani Edwards finished the day with two hits, an RBI and a run scored. She and Celeste Wood each doubled in the contests. Wood had a hit in each game and drove in a run. MacKenzie Denson also had a two hit day and came around to score once. Claira Skaggs had Tulsa's other RBI on the day.
Game 1: CHARLOTTE 4, TULSA 1
The 49ers struck first in the second inning as a walk proved costly for the Golden Hurricane. The free runner with one out stole second and then scored on a two-out single up the middle to make it 1-0.
Charlotte doubled its lead in the third frame. A hit batter with two outs extended the inning for the 49ers. After a wild pitch advanced the runner to second, she scored on a double to give Charlotte the 2-0 advantage.
A two-out error extended the inning in the fifth and allowed CLT to add a pair of runs. Instead of an out, Charlotte got to load the bases with two outs and a base hit up the middle made it 4-0.
Tulsa got a run back in the top of the sixth. Kylee Nash singled and was replaced by Tara Hall as a runner. MacKenzie Denson sacrificed her to second and then an Imani Edwards double brought her home. But Tulsa could not add to it in the sixth and went down in order in the seventh to lose 4-1.
Game 2: CHARLOTTE 5, TULSA 2
The Hurricane grabbed its first lead of the weekend in the opening inning of game two. Imani Edwards started the game with a bunt single. With one out, a throwing error from the third baseman allowed Edwards to extend her life on the paths and reach third. Claira Skaggs grounded out to second, but it was enough to bring in Edwards for the first run of the game.
The game entered a lengthy weather delay as the teams prepared for the third. When action returned, the Golden Hurricane put together a short two-out rally to get two on but couldn't push anything across.
Charlotte tied the game in the fourth. The leadoff batter reached on an error. She was retired on a subsequent fielder's choice, but Charlotte still had one on with only one out. After a hit batter moved the lead runner into scoring position, the Golden Hurricane attempted to turn two to get out of the inning. After getting the first out at second, the throw to first was side and a run came in to tie the game.
A two-out single helped Charlotte take the lead in the bottom of the fifth. After stealing second, pinch runner Savanna Nguyen came around to score on a double off the bat of Kiyah Garrett to give the 49ers a 2-1 lead.
Tulsa responded in the bottom of the frame. Denson beat out an infield single and moved to second on a Haley Morgan sacrifice bunt. Denson moved to third on a sacrifice fly to bring in Celeste Wood with two outs. The first baseman laced a double to left center, scoring Denson and putting Tara Hall, who had pinch run for Claira Skaggs, at third. But Tulsa could not find a way to take the lead.
The 49ers took control in the bottom of the inning. A pair of walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out. After a walk scored what proved to be the game winner and made it 3-2, a single and then fielding error on the same play brought in two more runs for the 5-2 win.
