TULSA, Okla. – The Tulsa softball team put on an offensive clinic in game one of the final series of the season as the Golden Hurricane shut down UTSA 10-0 in an exciting five-inning contest Friday in front of 501 fans at the Collins Family Softball Complex. TU rose to 28-18 and 13-9 in American Athletic Conference action, while the Roadrunners fell to 13-38 and 3-19 in league play.
Â
Tulsa ran in two batters in the first and third innings. A six-run fourth inning fueled by a grand slam from senior second-baseman Abby Jones put the Hurricane over the run-rule mark to seal the 10-0 decision in five innings. Jones also bombed a two-run homer in the third inning that put Tulsa up 4-0 heading into the fourth frame.
Â
Six different Hurricane combined for nine hits on the day, including senior shortstop Imani Edwards, senior leftfielder MacKenzie Denson and Jones, who each picked up two hits.
Â
Maura Moore (11-6) got the start and the win on Friday. The junior pitched all five innings, allowing just two hits and notching eight strikeouts in 16 at-bats.
Â
TULSA 10, UTSA 0
After Tulsa put away the Roadrunners' first three batters that included back-to-back swinging strikeouts, Imani Edwards doubled to second and advanced to third on a successful bunt from MacKenzie Denson. A deep foul-out in the left outfield by Haley Morgan allowed Edwards to advance to home while Denson stole third and ran home on a muffed ball by UTSA's third baseman. The score stood 2-0 in favor of the Hurricane entering the second inning.
Â
Inning two was uneventful as UTSA recorded one of two hits on the day and left the batter on base before Tulsa left two on base having walked both batters.
Â
Maura Moore opened the third inning with two more swinging strikeouts before UTSA recorded their final hit. The Roadrunners' next batter reached first on a fielder's choice to throw to second base to retire UTSA.
Â
TU added two more runs in the bottom of the third. Claira Skaggs reached first on a fielder's choice, sending Haley Morgan back to the dugout. At two outs, Abby Jones bombed a home run to right field to make it a 4-0 contest heading into the fourth inning.
Â
Tulsa cycled through UTSA's next three batters once more before taking the plate and putting on the best offense of the day. At one out, Maci Cole sent one out of the park for a solo home run to extend TU's lead to 5-0. At two outs, singles by Edwards and Denson followed by a hit-by-pitch advancement by Morgan filled up the bases for Tulsa as Jones stepped up to the plate for her third at bat. On a 1-1 count, Jones had a perfect swing that sent the ball deep to left field, giving her the grant slam and putting the Hurricane up by double-digits at 10-0. Kailyn Bearpaw got in on the action with a two-base hit before being retired to the dugout off a Roadrunner strikeout.
Â
UTSA's three hitters couldn't build any momentum as Moore struck out two more swinging batters and Edwards caught a pop-fly to seal Tulsa's 10-0 shutout of the Roadrunners.
