Tulsa Drops Game Two to Shockers

4/6/2024 4:19:00 PM | Softball

WICHITA, Kan. – A grand slam in the second put the Golden Hurricane softball team in a hole it never recovered from as the University of Tulsa fell in five innings 11-3 to Wichita State in game two of the series inside Wilkins Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Tulsa (24-12, 9-5 The American) tied the game in the top of the second after falling behind early but could not keep up with the Wichita State offense. The Shockers (18-13, 9-5 The American) hit their 51st home run of the season and recorded three doubles.

It was the most runs Tulsa has given up this season and only the second time a team has scored 10 or more runs against the Golden Hurricane (vs. Liberty, March 1). Anneca Anderson (7-2) got the start and took just her second loss of the season. She was tagged for four hits and six runs in two innings of work. This was the first time she's given up multiple runs in conference play and first time since facing Miami on March 3. Alexa Hopkins and Riley Grant each pitched in relief.

Kailyn Bearpaw and Celeste Wood, hitting in the seventh and eighth spots, had Tulsa's two RBI on Saturday. Bearpaw also had the defensive highlight of the game with a spectacular diving play in right to end the first inning and prevent further runs. Abby Jones and Claira Skaggs each had a hit and came around to score.

WICHITA STATE 11, Tulsa 3 (5 Innings)
The hosts got off to a quick start in the first with a single and double from its first two batters. Following a strikeout, the Shockers got their first run with a groundout to short that scored the runner. A fly ball to right center looked destined to bring in another run, but Kailyn Bearpaw made a spectacular diving play to retire the batter and limit Wichita State to just the one run.

Tulsa struck back in the second after a Claira Skaggs leadoff single. Abby Jones sacrificed her over to second, and a Celeste Wood groundout moved her to third. Bearpaw, who made the play in the bottom of the first, leveled the score with a single to right.

Wichita State responded in a big way with a five-run second to take command, all with two outs. A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases. WSU's Addison Bernard was then hit by a pitch to break the deadlock and give her team a 2-1 lead. Taylor Sedlacek followed with a grand slam down the left field line and suddenly the Shockers led 6-1.

Tulsa scored a run each in the third and fourth to cut into the deficit. Emma Vickrey singled to lead off the third, and Elle Rouse pinch ran after Vickrey advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Another fielder's choice moved Rouse to third with two outs, and she later scored on a wild pitch. In the fourth, Abby Jones singled and moved to second on a throwing error. She later advanced to third on a double play. Wood came to the plate and hit a bloop pop up that landed in front of the charging second baseman, who had no chance of a play at first and Jones came in to score to bring the score to 6-3 Wichita State.

Wichita State responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame. The Shockers doubled twice and had four hits in the frame. A walk, a pair of wild pitches and two stolen bases also helped the cause. In the fifth, Wichita State showed patience at the plate, loading the bases on two walks and a hit batsman. Then, an infield single brought in the game-ending run.
