Tulsa Falls 2-0 in Season Opener at UNLV
8/23/2024 12:36:00 AM | Men's Soccer
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Tulsa men's soccer team dropped its season opener 2-0 at UNLV late Thursday evening at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Golden Hurricane falls to 0-1-0 on the season.
A pair of second half goals within minutes of each other did the damage. UNLV took the lead in the 64th minute of action and doubled its advantage a little over five minutes later in the 69th. UNLV goalkeeper Hugo Lemos came up with five saves in the second half to deny Tulsa an opportunity to get back into the match, including tipping away a late Will Applegate header that seemed destined to find its way under the crossbar.
Alex Lopez was between the posts for TU and made three saves against the Rebels. He was beaten twice by two well-taken shots. Wes Bottenburg and Luke Adams joined Lopez in playing the full 90 on Thursday.
How it Happened
Tulsa looked to have gotten the opener in the 15th minute after Bowen McCloud headed a cross in off the crossbar following the first corner of the match. However, the flag was raised for offside, wiping out the best chance of the half for TU.
After a quiet and scoreless first, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock just under 20 minutes after the halftime break. Starting on its own side of the field with a throw-in, the Rebels quickly switched the field to Brophy Howard who carried it forward from his own half and was never challenged before unleashing a shot from outside the box that hit the right side of the net for the opener.
UNLV doubled its lead at the 68:57 mark after the Golden Hurricane failed to clear a UNLV free kick into the box. Mikah Madrid was first to a loose ball bouncing away from goal just to the right of the penalty arc. Madrid's left-footed one-timer found the bottom left corner for the 2-0 lead.
