Schutte Scores Hat Trick, Tulsa Nets Nine in Shutout of Arkansas-Pine Bluff

9/1/2024 8:29:00 PM | Women's Soccer

TULSA, Okla. — True freshman Blaine Schutte of Eureka, Mo., put up a hat trick Sunday as the Tulsa women's soccer team shut down the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions 9-0 at the Hurricane Soccer Stadium. The Golden Hurricane improved to 3-1-2 and UAPB falls to 1-2-0.

The hat trick is Tulsa's first since Sept. 11, 2022, when current senior forward Quinn Turner scored three goals, also against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Schutte stands as the fifth freshman in program history to record a hat trick, joining an elite group of players that all had standout careers for the Hurricane including Janette Javet (1990-93), Amber Farr (1995-98), Danielle Fauteux (2002-03) and Claire Nicholson (2010-2013).

The 9-0 victory is the highest scoring game for the TU women since 2010, when the Hurricane dominated Jackson State 10-0 at home.

Tulsa finished the game with six different scorers. Redshirt junior forward Hannah Chance was one goal shy from a hat trick of her own with two. Freshman midfielder Ady Bechtel, sophomore forward Leah Diaz, sophomore midfielder Piper Szafranski and senior Madison Williams each got in on the scoring for the Hurricane's widest scoring margin under the direction of Head Coach Jim Rhein.

Six of the eight assists came from Diaz and true freshman forward Aniya Facen, who each set up three of the day's scores.

Redshirt junior Kylie Koeijmans earned the starting nod at goal and didn't have to save the ball once, thanks in part to strong defensive play by defenders Cicely-Ann Spencer-Wickham, Ashlyn Fernandez and Madison Williams.

As a group, Tulsa finished with a whopping 53 shots, 29 shots on goal and 12 corner kicks.

Tulsa will remain at home to take on Texas A&M-Commerce (1-2-1) Thursday night at 7 p.m.

How it Happened
Three of Tulsa's goals came in the first half from MF Piper Szafranski (11th minute), D Madison Williams (39th minute) and F Blaine Schutte (45th minute). Williams' goal was unassisted, and Szafranski's and Schutte's came from Leah Diaz and Aniya Facen, respectively.

At halftime, Tulsa had accumulated 21 shots and 11 shots on goal. UAPB's goalkeeper Makaila Riedel had six saves to her name at this point.

Tulsa exploded in the second half with six more goals. Blaine Schutte's second-half goals came in the 65th and 80th minutes to secure the hat trick for the true freshman out of Eureka, Mo.

Hannah Chance's pair of goals came back-to-back 59th and 61st minutes, while Diaz (53rd minute) and Ady Bechtel (77th minute) add their goals down the stretch. Bechtel had shot the ball 10 times and four times on goal this season before finally scoring a goal of her own.
