Freshman Quarterback Kirk Francis Named to Honor Roll
TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa graduate wide receiver and punt returner Kamdyn Benjamin was named the American Athletic Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against Northwestern State in the season opener, the league office announced on Monday.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Kirk Francis was named to the weekly honor roll.
Benjamin was the primary punt returner for TU in the opener. Midway through the first quarter, he corralled a punt at the Tulsa 34 before breaking a pair of tackles and taking it 66 yards for a touchdown. It was Tulsa's first punt return for a touchdown since Trey Watts returned a punt 54 yards against UCF in the Conference USA Championship Game.
The punt return came a series after Benjamin put Tulsa on the board for the first time this season with a 36-yard touchdown reception. He finished the game with 150 all-purpose yards.
Francis found Benjamin for the opening touchdown and would go on to throw four TD passes in the matchup, tying Seth Boomer (2018 vs. UCONN) for most by a freshman quarterback at Tulsa.
The redshirt freshman finished the game 23-of-30 for 299 yards in the win. He led all American Athletic Conference quarterbacks in week one with a 204.4 efficiency rating.
The Golden Hurricane go on the road this weekend to face Arkansas State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday.
