
Golden Hurricane Fights Hard but Comes Up Short at ECU

Baylor Hayes completed 23 of 41 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns. Ray Coney led the defensive effort with 12 total tackles, marking his fourth game of 10 or more tackles this season. Zion Booker recorded nine receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown, achieving his fifth game of the season with five or more receptions and tying a career-high. Stephen Kittleman contributed with a rushing touchdown on his lone carry. Brody Foley led the receiving core with his first 100-yard receiving game. He ended the game with 125 receiving yards.
East Carolina capitalized on their first possession, with Nick Mazzie converting a 37-yard field goal at 10:52 to take an early 3-0 lead. Later, the Pirates extended their advantage with a 66-yard touchdown pass from Katin Houser to Anthony Smith at 5:08, making it 10-0. The Golden Hurricane responded promptly, as Baylor Hayes connected with Brody Foley for a 38-yard touchdown pass at 2:44, making it 10-7 in favor of ECU.
East Carolina extended their lead early in the second quarter with Marlon Gunn Jr. rushing for a 1-yard touchdown just three seconds into the period. Tulsa responded with a determined drive, highlighted by Zion Steptoe's 32-yard rush and a clutch pass from Hayes to Foley for 25 yards, setting up a touchdown pass to Zion Booker at 11:51, narrowing the gap to 17–14. However, the Pirates quickly regained momentum as Houser connected with Smith for a 63-yard touchdown pass at 9:33, bringing the score to 24–14.
In the third quarter, East Carolina extended their lead with a significant play from London Montgomery, who rushed for a 51-yard touchdown at the 13:09 mark, increasing their advantage to 31-14. Tulsa responded with a methodical drive, resulting in a successful 46-yard field goal by Seth Morgan at 7:12, narrowing the deficit to 31-17. Tulsa's defense held firm, forcing a turnover on downs late in the quarter, but their subsequent drive failed to produce additional points as the quarter concluded.
In the fourth quarter, Tulsa reduced the deficit early with a 1-yard touchdown run by Stephen Kittleman, making the score 31–24 at 14:47. East Carolina responded with a 32-yard field goal by Nick Mazzie at 10:51, extending their lead to 34–24. With 5:22 remaining, Houser's 2-yard touchdown run increased the Pirates' advantage to 41–24. Despite a late 26-yard field goal by Seth Morgan at 1:49, East Carolina secured the win with a final score of 41–27.
Looking ahead, Tulsa will take on Temple at H.A. Chapman Stadium in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Saturday, October 25th. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
