Tulsa Drops Weekend Finale at McNeese

2/16/2025 4:06:00 PM | Softball

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Golden Hurricane played from behind for most of Sunday's game as the University of Tulsa softball team came up short 6-2 at McNeese to finish the weekend.

Tulsa ended the I-10 Border Classic with a 2-3 record and is 5-5 on the season. McNeese improved to 7-4 on the season with the win.

The Golden Hurricane tied the game twice, in the second and fourth innings, but the Cowgirls quickly retook the lead in the bottom of those frames. McNeese scored in every inning it batted except for the third.

Alexa Hopkins, Maura Moore (4-2) and Brinly Maples each tossed 2.0 innings. Hopkins got the start and allowed two runs on four hits with a strikeout. Moore took the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits. Maples allowed a run with two walks but didn't' allow a hit in her two innings.

Celeste Wood hit her second home run of the season, a solo shot to tie the game in the second. Amber Turner recorded a three-hit day and came around to score Tulsa's second run of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cowgirls grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the opening frame, scoring before the first out was recorded. A leadoff walk followed by consecutive singles brought in the first run of the game.

Tulsa leveled the score in the top of the second as Celeste Wood led the inning with a solo home run to right, her second homer of the season and 11th RBI.

McNeese retook the lead in the bottom of the inning, this time doing all the damage with two outs. In a mirror of the first inning, a walk got things started. Back-to-back singles scored a run as the Cowgirls went ahead 2-1.

Amber Turner led the fourth inning with a double to left. She came around to score and tie the game a second time as Whitney Holcomb singled down the left field line.

The 2-2 tie didn't survive the bottom of the frame, and for the third time, walks came back to bite TU. A pair of walks and a passed ball put two runners in scoring position with only one out. Both runners came around to score on a Samantha Mundine base hit up the middle and McNeese went back ahead 4-2.
A leadoff home run from Jada Munoz in the fifth extended the McNeese advantage to 5-2. The Cowgirls added a sixth in the bottom of the sixth on a groundout to short, scoring a runner from third.

The Hurricane went down in order in the seventh as as the Cowgirls secured the 6-2 win.
