Tulsa Softball Falls to North Texas in Series Finale
3/30/2025 3:33:00 PM | Softball
Unlike Saturday's contest where the Golden Hurricane (18-18, 6-6 The American) took an early lead over North Texas (24-12, 7-5 The American), the Mean Green took control early and never looked back. UNT scored four in the first, a run in the second, five in the fourth and three in the fifth. Tulsa grabbed a run back in the third, when the game was within reach, and then tacked on three more in the final frame.
Maci Cole and Elle Rouse each had two hits as they continued their strong weekend at the plate. Cole doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs. Rouse also doubled and brought home a run, also scoring twice, herself. Celeste Wood recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly, and Amber Turner tripled.
North Texas had five players with multi-hit games, combining for a season-high 16 hits a game after collecting 15. Kailyn Bearpaw and Elizabeht Moffitt each had a trio of hits. Moffitt and Madison Conley had the team-high with three RBIs, each.
Maura Moore (12-8) started and only pitched one inning in the loss. She was tagged for four runs on five hits. Alexa Hopkins spun 2.2 innings and allowed six runs on six hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts. Brinly Maples finished the game, going an inning and a third and getting hit for three runs, two earned, and allowing five hits.
Skylar Savage (11-5) picked up a complete game win for North Texas. In five innings of work, she allowed four runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout. Three of her allowed runs were in the final inning and Tulsa half of TU's hits were in the fifth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Conley's three-run home run highlighted a four-run first inning for the Mean Green, who jumped ahead of Tulsa immediately on Sunday. It took two batters for UNT to take the lead in the contest. A leadoff single and a wild pitch moved a runner into scoring position. The next batter singled down the left field line to make it 1-0. With two outs, North Texas had runners on first and second for Conley, who hammered a 2-1 pitch over the wall in left.
Hopkins came in to pitch the second for Tulsa. A one-out walk came around to score the only run of the inning. The runner stole second and scored on a single to right to go ahead 5-0.
The Hurricane got its first run of the game in the bottom of the third. Rouse doubled to get a runner on. With two outs, Cole laced a 3-2 pitch to right center to score Rouse and cut the deficit to 5-1.
North Texas doubled its advantage in the top of the fourth, ending any threat of a comeback. The Mean Green got a double and four singles in the inning, as well as a double steal of second and home to go up 10-1. UNT batted around in the inning, with Emma Grahmann, who doubled to lead off the inning, serving as the final out of the frame.
UNT added three more in the top of the fifth inning. After a groundout to start the top half of the inning, North Texas got three-straight singles, the final one scored two to push the lead to 12-1. The Mean Green added another run on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, just avoiding a 6-4-3 double play and TU settled for the 6-4 putout to get to two outs. A strikeout ended UNT's at-bats with a 13-1 lead.
Needing five runs to keep the game going, TU got things started with a walk to pinch hitter Aliya Scarborough. A wild pitch advanced her to second and she scored on a Rouse single. Danielle Burns singled and then Brookley Foster pinch ran for her. Cole picked up another RBI with her second double of the game, scoring Rouse. Wood brought Foster in with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 13-4. Paige Knight came up representing the run needed to keep the game going. She ripped a line drive, but it was at the second baseman, who was able to reach up and secure the 13-4 win for North Texas.
Tulsa was outhit 16-6 in Sunday's contest, the most hits by a TU opponent this season. The Hurricane committed three errors compared to none from the Mean Green. Tulsa had more extra-base hits, recording three doubles and a triple, while UNT recorded a double and a home run, doing most of their damage on singles.
