Tulsa Takes Game Two from UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Golden Hurricane bounced back to beat UTSA 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
The Golden Hurricane (20-28, 8-15 The American) scored runs in the third and fifth innings to take down UTSA (20-30, 5-18 The American). Tulsa outhit the hosts 7-6 and left nine on base for the second game in a row compared to three from the Roadrunners.
Brinly Maples (5-6) spun a gem for the Hurricane, picking up her fourth complete game win of the season. The lone run allowed was on a line drive home run in the second inning. She gave up just six hits and struck out a batter. Maples was efficient, with 52 of her 76 pitches resulting in strikes, and she never walked a batter.
Her counterpart, Raegan Stoudt (1-8) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings. She walked four and struck out three. Katia Reyes threw the other 2.0 innings and didn't allow a hit and just one baserunner on a walk.
Maci Cole and Celeste Wood each had two-hit days. Wood was 2-2 before getting removed from the game in the fourth. Cole and Elle Rouse each doubled in the contest. Rouse's fifth-inning double drove in the Annika Dill, which proved to be the winning run. Faith Russell picked up the other RBI with a single in the third to score Cole.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Roadrunners took the lead in the bottom of the second, and just like game one it was with a solo home run for their first hit. With two away, Kalee Rochinski lifted the first pitch she saw over the wall in left to put UTSA up 1-0.
The Hurricane struck back in the third. After going hitless on Friday, Cole singled to left center to open the inning and then moved to second on a wild pitch. She didn't have to wait long to score as Russell dropped a single in to center, advancing to second as the throw home was not on time to catch Cole, tying the game at 1-1.
Wood kept the line moving with a single up the middle to put runners on the corner. Dill lifted a fly ball to right, but it wasn't quite deep enough as UTSA was able to get the play at the plate to complete the double play. A pair of walks loaded the bags, but for the second game in a row, Tulsa left the bases stranded in the third.
UTSA looked to take the lead in the bottom of the third. A runner attempted to steal second and the throw hit her while sliding into second and went into center. The runner was able to score on the loose ball to seemingly take the lead. However, after review, it was judged she left first early and Tulsa escaped with no damage.
The Golden Hurricane scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the fifth. Dill singled with one away to get things started. She moved to second on a two-out walk administered to Amber Turner. Rouse then lifted a double to left field, scoring Dill to go up 2-1. Turner attempted to score on the play as well but was thrown out at the plate.
Maples finished the complete game to grab the 2-1 win. She got UTSA down in order in the fifth. The Hurricane pulled off a double play in the sixth to keep the Roadrunners off the board. In the seventh, UTSA got a leadoff single, who was promptly sacrificed to second. But Maples settled in and got a lineout to left and a groundout to third to end the game.

The teams will play a rubber match on Sunday to decide the series. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. and will air on ESPN+.
