TULSA, Okla. – The Golden Hurricane softball team dropped the regular season finale 6-0 to Florida Atlantic on Senior Day at the Collins Family Softball Complex Sunday afternoon.
Tulsa finishes the regular season 20-32 and 8-19 in American Athletic Conference play. FAU moves to 44-9 and 23-4 in league contests. The Golden Hurricane did not score a run in the series after the second inning of game one, getting shutout over the ensuing 19 innings of softball.
After the game, Tulsa honored the careers of Celeste Wood, Danielle Burns, Alexa Hopkins and Paige Knight.
Wood started the game in right field for her final appearance after nearly playing in 200 contests in her four-year career. Her senior season was cut short by an injury a couple of weekends ago, and she was removed after the first pitch, getting a standing ovation from the TU crowd and her teammates. Burns started at first, Knight at third and Hopkins got the start in the circle.
Hopkins (2-9) pitched an inning and received the loss. She allowed one run on three hits. Brinly Maples pitched the next four innings and was tagged for five runs on nine hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Maura Moore finished the final two innings, giving up just one hit, striking out two and administering one walk.
Autumn Court (23-2) got the start and win for the Owls, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing just four hits, no walks and striking out five. Ainsley Lamb picked up her 11th save, throwing 2.1 clean innings and striking out a batter. They combined for the shutout.
Maci Cole singled in her first at-bat. Faith Russell, Elle Rouse and Whitney Holcomb each got hits as well. Tulsa was outhit 13-4 in the loss and it was a clean game for both teams, neither committing an error. Florida Atlantic left 12 on-base compared to three stranded from Tulsa.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Florida Atlantic opened the game with three straight singles, the final of which drove in the game's opening run. The Owls looked poised to break the game open early, but Hopkins got an out at second on a fielder's choice, a popup to second and a foul out to Holcomb in left to end the threat.
In the third, the Owls added to their lead. A leadoff single to left got the frame started. After moving to second on a groundout, another single brought home a run to make it 2-0 for the visitors. The third run came an inning later in the fourth. Another leadoff single opened the inning. But after a strikeout and fielder's choice, there were two outs with a runner still at first. Then FAU struck with another pair of singles to jump up 3-0 after four.
Florida Atlantic put together its best inning in the sixth. A single and walk to open the inning were rewarded by a double down the left field line, scoring both runners to give FAU a 5-0 lead. Moore came in to pitch and forced a groundout for the first out of the inning. A single to center brought home a run and the Owls led 6-0, which stood as the final score.
