TYLER, Texas – Tulsa wide receiver Zion Steptoe has been named to the 2025 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List, the Tyler Chamber of Commerence and SPORTyler announced on Wednesday.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: Played football at and graduated from a Texas High School and/or currently playing at Texas D1 four-year college.
Steptoe made an immediate impact in his first season at Tulsa, continuing a family legacy—both his father and stepfather played football for the Golden Hurricane. In 2024, he set career highs in receptions (15) and receiving yards (205), highlighted by a standout performance against Northwestern State where he recorded five catches for 88 yards, both personal bests. As he enters the 2025 season, Steptoe will serve on the Tulsa Football Leadership Council.
The semifinalists for the award will be announced in November with the finalists announced in December. The banquet/winner announcement will take place in January 2025.
The award is named in honor of Earl Campbell, who graduated from John Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas, before playing at Texas. In his senior season, Campbell led the nation with 1,744 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns, becoming Texas' first Heisman Trophy winner. He was drafted by the Houston Oilers, where he earned Rookie of the Year honors in 1978 and went on to lead the NFL in rushing three times. Campbell earned NFL MVP in 1979 and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1991.
Tulsa opens the season at home against Abilene Christian on Friday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. inside H.A. Chapman Stadium.
