Tulsa Plays to Goalless Draw in Season Opener Against CSUN

8/21/2025 10:53:00 PM | Men's Soccer

TULSA, Okla. — Strong defensive play and brilliant saves by both goalkeepers led to a 0-0 draw between Tulsa (0-0-1) and CSUN (0-0-1) in the regular-season opener at Hurricane Soccer Stadium.

Tulsa denied CSUN a win over the Golden Hurricane for the first time as the series moves to 4-0-1 in favor of the Matadors.

Starting in goal for Tulsa was Carlito Saylon, who came away with his first career clean sheet thanks to two saves and brilliant play by the Golden Hurricane back line.

"I'm proud to come out and get the clean sheet," said Saylon. "The team played great tonight. If it wasn't for my back line, I wouldn't have gotten the shutout. We were able to hold them off for 90 minutes, and that's what it was all about.

"We knew there was going to be a lot of defensive work. We knew they were going to be heavy on offense and play very physically. We came into the game wanting to keep our heads straight, and I felt like we did."

Tulsa would go on to finish with 11 shots, the first six of which were all on goal and saved by the Matadors' goalkeeper, Dorian Drucks, who would go on to end the game with seven saves. Tulsa's Gijs Hovius led the charge with three shots on goal.

The second half picked up as the sun went down. The Golden Hurricane shot the ball seven times and had two corner kicks, while the Matadors matched their first-half shot total with two shots and found the corners three times.

Looking ahead, Tulsa takes to their home field once more to face Cal State Fullerton on August 24. The match is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Hurricane Soccer Stadium as part of a doubleheader with the women's soccer team, who plays Oklahoma at 5 p.m.
