Men's Soccer Falls to Cal Baptist 3-1

TULSA, Okla. — California Baptist University (4-1-1, 0-0-0) secured a 3-1 victory over the University of Tulsa (1-4-2, 0-1-0) at Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium, as the Lancers outshot the Golden Hurricane 15-14, marking the most shots Tulsa has faced from an opponent so far this season.

The first half of the match between Tulsa and California Baptist University saw a tense battle unfold, with early fouls setting the tone. The Lancers struck first in the 9th minute with a goal from Felix Ezekwuka, assisted by Liam Jones, quickly followed by a penalty kick goal from Blake D'Agostino less than a minute later. Tulsa responded in the 25th minute with a goal by Jared Aguilar—his first of the season and the second of his career—assisted by Aimar Membrila, the first of his career, and Dani Gamboa, narrowing the score to 2-1. Despite several attempts by the Golden Hurricane, including a shot saved by Hugo Do Rego and multiple corner kicks, the Lancers maintained their lead into the break.

In the second half, Tulsa's defense held strong against a persistent California Baptist offense, with Carlito Saylon making multiple critical saves, totaling a season high of nine, which was more than double the amount in any other game this season. Andrew Lovell and Luis Borrero each tested Saylon early on, but their attempts were denied, maintaining the tension. Despite a series of fouls from both sides, momentum shifted when Alexander Cruz scored for the Lancers in the 85th minute, assisted by Ezekwuka, extending their lead to 3-1. The Golden Hurricane's attempts, including shots by Gyuwon Chong, who achieved a season high in shots on goal, and Kevin Thallinger, were thwarted by CBU's Do Rego, solidifying the Lancers' advantage as the half concluded.

Tulsa fell to 1-4-2 overall following the loss. The Lancers improved to 4-1-1 overall after the victory.

In their next game, the Golden Hurricane will host South Florida on Sept. 21, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. in Tulsa, Okla.
