TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa volleyball outlasted Wichita State in five sets (25-17, 25-27, 25-15, 22-25, 16-14) to win a gritty, instant classic in the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Sunday. The Golden Hurricane are now 6-0 in conference play for the first time since 2013 and have not lost to an American Conference opponent in 13 matches, dating back to Nov. 2 of last year.

The match saw four TU players on offense reach double-figures in kills and four players on defense record 10 or more digs on the day.

In addition, three Golden Hurricane came away with double-doubles, including sophomore setter Meg Goodwin (23 assists/18 digs), junior setter Brittany Bacorn (29 assists/13 digs) and senior outside hitter Olivia Vance (15 kills/14 kills). Both double-doubles for Goodwin and Vance are the first in their respective careers.

Powering the defense was senior libero Lauren Patterson, who dug out the ball 26 times – just two off her career record – while Vance and sophomore middle Jill Hanson each were in on six blocks.

In reference to Tulsa's depth on offense, Olivia Vance said, "It's amazing, honestly. It takes pressure off me, and it also gives me the seam a lot, because I have Jill Hanson and Campbell Hague in the middle, and Wichita's middles aren't going to. leave them alone. So I get a nice little seam in my block, and it's nice because I know that if I'm not getting a kill right then, if I'm not playing my best, I know my teammates have my back in that moment."

After Wichita State scored the first point, Tulsa moved in front 5-2 behind kills from Vance and Hanson and a Patterson service ace. Wichita State stayed within 10-9, but TU maintained control as Kat Cooper, Hanson, Vance and Campbell Hague added kills before Goodwin's ace helped stretch the lead to 17-11. Wichita State cut the margin to 18-15, then Hague put down a kill for 19-15 and served four straight Tulsa points, including her own ace and kills by Hanson and Isabella Ocampo. After the Shockers got back within 24-17, Cooper finished the set with a kill to give Tulsa a 25-17 win.

Wichita State moved in front 10-5 in the second set before Tulsa cut the gap to 10-8 on a Hague kill, a Vance kill and a Shocker attack error. Tulsa pulled even at 12-12 with Hague kills on either side of back-to-back Maegan Mills kills, and the teams traded points until Hanson's kill gave Tulsa a 15-14 lead. The set stayed tight from there, with Tulsa going ahead 20-18 before Wichita State scored three straight to move back in front 21-20. Tulsa tied the set at 23-23, 24-24 and 25-25, but Wichita State closed it with a Kate Mobley kill and a Gabi Maas service ace for a 27-25 set win.

Tulsa started the third set with a Bacorn ace and Hanson kill for a 2-0 lead, but Wichita State answered with three straight points and the teams traded points to 6-6 before a Wichita State service error put TU back in front. Meg Goodwin followed with consecutive aces and back-to-back Ava Steffe kills to give Tulsa an 11-6 edge, and after the Shockers cut it to 13-11, Tulsa pushed ahead 15-12. TU then won six straight rallies behind kills from Mills, Cooper and Vance, with Cooper putting down three during the run, and later finished the set with a Goodwin ace to reach set point and a Hague kill for a 25-15 win.

After Wichita State moved ahead 3-1, Tulsa tied the fourth set on kills by Hanson and Vance and went in front 6-4 after a block by Vance and Hague, a Wichita State attack error and another Vance kill. The set stayed even through 10-10, but Mills had a kill for an 11-10 lead and Cooper added one for 13-10 as Tulsa pushed ahead 16-11 behind three Shocker attack errors. Wichita State cut it to 17-15 before Hague and Mills kills helped Tulsa reach 19-15, and Steffe later put Tulsa up 20-16. Wichita State scored four straight to tie it at 20-20, Tulsa answered for a 22-20 lead on a service error and a block by Mills and Hanson, but Wichita State scored the final five points to take the set 25-22.

Tulsa moved in front early after Wichita State led 3-2, getting a kill from Vance, three Wichita State errors and a Steffe kill to go ahead 7-3. Hague's ace later put TU up 9-5, but the Shockers answered with five straight points, including kills from Janaya Weitkemper and Maddie Wilson, to take a 10-9 lead. The teams traded points from there, with Mills and Hanson kills and a Hanson-Cooper block helping Tulsa pull even before Vance tied it at 13-13 and a Wichita St. error gave Tulsa a 14-13 edge. After Wichita State tied the set at 14-14 on an Olivia Cohee kill, Vance answered with a kill and Tulsa finished the 16-14 set on a block by Mills and Hague.

TU will another home match on Friday, Oct. 16, at 6 p.m. against Rice (10-8, 4-2 American) before heading to Denton, Texas, to face North Texas (9-8, 2-4 American) on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m.
