
Tulsa Rallies Late to Earn Split on Opening Day of Hurricane Invitational

TULSA, Okla. — Playing in front of the home crowd for the first time this season, Tulsa earned a walk-off win over South Dakota State, 4-3, in the first game of the Hurricane Invitational. The team couldn't keep up the momentum, falling in the nightcap of the day to No. 4 Nebraska, 9-1.
In the first game against South Dakota State, Tulsa triumphed in extra innings, clinching the win in the eighth inning. The Golden Hurricane and the Jackrabbits were tied at three runs each after seven innings, with South Dakota State managing seven hits and committing one error.
Mackenzy Glenn led the offense with two hits and one RBI, which included a double. Amber Turner also made a significant contribution with two hits, two runs, and an RBI, as well as a crucial double. Aliya Scarborough added a pinch-hit single and an RBI, while Maci Cole excelled defensively with four assists, in addition to a hit and a stolen base.
On the mound, Makenzie Freeman pitched four innings for Tulsa, allowing four hits and two earned runs, both from home runs, while striking out one and not issuing any walks. Brinly Maples entered in relief, also pitching four innings, allowing three hits and one unearned run, and striking out one while throwing 24 of her 31 pitches for strikes, earning the win without allowing a walk.
The scoring began early for Tulsa as Maci Cole singled and stole second, allowing Amber Turner to drive her in with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. South Dakota State responded in the third inning with two solo home runs, taking a 2-1 lead. Tulsa tied the game in the sixth inning when Turner doubled and scored on Annika Dill's sacrifice fly, making it 2-2.
In the seventh inning, Aliya Scarborough's RBI single brought home Malia Cabuyaban, tying the game at 3-3 after South Dakota State had taken the lead with an unearned run. The decisive eighth inning saw Turner reach base on a fielding error and advance to third on a series of strategic plays, with Glenn walking with the bases loaded to score the winning run. Final score: Tulsa 4, South Dakota State 3.
In game two, Nebraska took an early lead with a single by Ava Kuszak in the first inning, bringing home Jordy Frahm. They extended their lead in the second with a solo home run from Kacie Hoffmann, but Tulsa responded with a Clara Skaggs home run to centerfield, cutting the Husker lead in half.
The third through fifth innings remained scoreless, with Nebraska leading 2-1 at the end of the fifth. However, Nebraska erupted in the sixth inning, scoring seven runs, highlighted by an RBI single from Lauren Camenzind, a two-RBI double from Hannah Camenzind, and a two-run homer by Samantha Bland, concluding the game with a score of Nebraska 9, Tulsa 1.
Tulsa is back on the diamond tomorrow for another doubleheader beginning with a rematch with South Dakota State, followed by a contest with Southeast Missouri State.
