Comeback Comes Up Short in Extra Inning Affair

3/13/2026 10:14:00 PM | Softball

DENTON, Texas —  In a back-and-forth battle that went to extra innings, Tulsa fell to North Texas by a score of 9-8 in a tense nine-inning contest at Lovelace Stadium.

Tulsa's offense was highlighted by 12 hits, including a home run, but it was unable to hold off the Mean Green, which scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Amber Turner drove in three runs with a home run, contributing significantly to the scoring. Claira Skaggs added two RBI and collected three hits, providing consistent offense. Annika Dill recorded two RBI and a triple, demonstrating her ability to produce extra-base hits.

Makenzie Freeman provided stability in the circle with five innings of work, allowing just one earned run on six hits, while striking out eight batters, and walking two. Despite inheriting three runners, Freeman managed to limit further damage, showcasing significant control and endurance.

Tulsa opened the game with a strong start, as Turner homered to right field, driving in three runs after Faith Russell and Skaggs reached base. North Texas responded with a two-run homer, narrowing the gap. The inning concluded with Tulsa leading 3-2.

In the third inning, Daeya Moses doubled and later scored on a fielding error, bringing Tulsa to a tie with North Texas at 4-4.

During the fifth inning, Tulsa's offense surged as Skaggs singled up the middle, bringing in two more runs. The score stood at 8-6 in favor of the Mean Green at the end of the inning.

The sixth inning saw the Golden Hurricane leveling the score again as Dill's triple to left center brought home two runs, tying the game at 8-8.

Despite a tense standoff through extra innings, North Texas secured the win in the ninth with a run-scoring single, concluding the game with a final score of 9-8 in North Texas's favor.

These two teams are back at it tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the second game of the series.
