Tulsa Homers Five Times but Falls in Doubleheader Against UTSA

TULSA, Okla. — Despite five home runs by Tulsa, including three from Claira Skaggs, they were defeated twice in a doubleheader by UTSA to open American Conference action on Saturday at the Collins Family Softball Complex. UTSA took the first game 5-2 before rallying late to win the second game 12-11 in nine innings.
 
In the first game, Tulsa struggled to recover from a four-run first inning by UTSA, despite hitting two home runs. Claira Skaggs recorded a home run and contributed four assists, while Amber Turner also hit a home run, adding two hits and an RBI with one run scored. Faith Russell collected two hits, including a double, in her four plate appearances. Isabella Arroyo pitched two innings in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out one batter.
 
UTSA took an early lead in the first inning with a strong offensive showing, scoring four runs. Sabrina Wick's RBI single and a subsequent throwing error allowed UTSA to capitalize, followed by Brookelynn Meador's RBI infield single and a two-RBI single by Katia Reyes, making the score 4-0 after the first inning.
 
Tulsa remained scoreless through the fourth inning, while UTSA added another run in the fifth when Makayla Madrid hit a solo home run, extending its lead to 5-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Tulsa's Skaggs hit a solo home run to right center, putting the team on the scoreboard. The score stood at 5-1 after five innings. Tulsa's Turner hit a solo home run to deep center field in the seventh inning, narrowing the deficit. Despite Tulsa's efforts, the game concluded with a final score of 5-2 in favor of the Roadrunners.
 
In the second game, Tulsa and UTSA both delivered offensive performances, with Tulsa scoring four runs in the fourth and sixth innings, while UTSA secured the win with a three-run ninth inning. Claira Skaggs delivered a powerful performance with two home runs and six RBI. Madison Garcia contributed by scoring two runs and recording two hits. Emma Vickrey added two RBI and a home run, while Maci Cole made an impact defensively with five assists.
 
UTSA took an early lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly that brought in one unearned run. Tulsa was unable to score in its half, leaving the Roadrunners ahead 1-0 after the first inning. In the third inning, Tulsa's Madison Garcia scored on a fielder's choice by Cole, narrowing the gap. However, UTSA responded with a two-run double, extending its lead to 3-1 by the end of the inning.
 
Tulsa seized momentum in the fourth inning. Elle Rouse's sacrifice fly scored Mackenzy Glenn, and a single by Garcia brought in Daeya Moses. Skaggs then delivered a two-run single, giving Tulsa a 5-3 lead after four innings. The sixth inning saw the Golden Hurricane extend its lead further, with Skaggs homering to score two, followed by Vickrey's two-run homer, putting Tulsa ahead 9-3.
 
In a dramatic seventh inning, the Roadrunners mounted a comeback with three home runs, scoring six runs and tying the game at 9-9. The game remained tied through the eighth inning as both teams failed to score, keeping the tally at 9-9. In the ninth inning, Skaggs' two-run homer gave Tulsa a brief lead. However, UTSA responded with three runs, including a game-winning RBI single, clinching a 12-11 victory over Tulsa. Final score: UTSA 12, Golden Hurricane 11.
 
The team's wrap up a three-game set tomorrow at noon.
