Tulsa Steeplechase Squad Delivers Big Points on Day Two of American Outdoor Championships

DENTON, Texas – Tulsa track and field closed out day two of the American Outdoor Championships with a multiple steeplechase medalists and finals qualifiers, as the Golden Hurricane men sit fourth in the team standings and the women rank eighth heading into the final day of competition.

The women's 3000-meter steeplechase highlighted the evening for Tulsa, with Sara Morefield successfully defending her conference title in a winning time of 10:15.64. Morefield became just the second repeat American women's steeplechase champion in conference history, joining former Golden Hurricane Layla Roebke, who captured back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023.

Tulsa also claimed the runner-up finish in the event, as Kathryn Koonts crossed second in 10:18.66 to give the Hurricane 18 points in the race.

On the men's side, Luke Birdseye continued his strong conference success with a silver-medal performance in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase, finishing in 9:03.10. Birdseye repeated on the podium after earning bronze in the event a season ago. Tulsa added additional points from Brady Korsmo, who placed sixth in 9:22.94, while Walker St. John finished 11th and Luke Lambert took 13th.

Tulsa advanced three athletes through the 800-meter preliminaries. Hannah Taylor qualified fifth overall in the women's race with a time of 2:12.18, while Grace MacDonald also moved on after clocking 2:12.94. Joseph Snyder secured his place in the men's final with a qualifying time of 1:51.49.

In the men's 400 meters, Evan Sanni-Thomas posted one of the top preliminary times of the day, running 46.48 to automatically qualify for the final.

Missing qualification for finals, Annie-May Cannings finished 13th in the women's 400 meters in 55.64, while Cahsia Page placed 21st. Harrison Stapleton and Luke Finzen took 15th and 20th, respectively, in the men's 400-meter preliminaries.

In field competition, Isabella Famiglietti placed 13th in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.88 meters and also competed in the women's 100-meter preliminaries, finishing 16th in 11.70.

Tulsa will return to the track for Saturday finals tomorrow as the men's and women's programs both look to add more points to their total and move up the leaderboard.
