TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa took care of business Tuesday, defeating Oral Roberts 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-17) in the Mabee Center. The Golden Hurricane remain undefeated with a 7-0 record, the program's best start to a season since 2000.
TU hit .286 with 41 kills and seven aces while holding the Golden Eagles to a .070 hitting percentage. The last 17 consecutive meetings between Tulsa and ORU have gone the Golden Hurricane's way, who now have 17 straight wins in regular season non-conference matches.
"We came out a little slow, but we came together as a team and started executing very well down the stretch," said fifth-year middle blocker Kat Cooper, who finished with eight kills on .538 hitting. "I'm excited to be back on the court. I'm very grateful to be here."
The opening set moved back and forth early, with Cooper and Maegan Mills putting down kills for the Golden Hurricane before the Golden Eagles moved in front 11-10 on a Ciara Cunningham kill. Olivia Vance tied it at 11-11 with a kill, the Golden Hurricane moved ahead on a Cunningham attack error, and after the Golden Eagles tied it at 12-12, Vance's kill and blocks involving Emma Blaine, Jill Hanson and Vance gave the Golden Hurricane a 15-12 lead. The Golden Hurricane kept separation with Hanson's kill and Vance's service ace for 17-13, then pushed the margin to 20-14 behind a Golden Eagles attack error, Hanson's ace and Blaine's kill. Cooper added kills for 21-15 and 22-16 around a Golden Eagles point, and Vance and Cooper followed with consecutive kills before Mills served an ace to close the Golden Hurricane's 25-16 set win.
Tulsa moved ahead 8-3 in the second set with Brittany Bacorn at the service line for four straight points, a stretch that included three Golden Eagles attack errors and a Hanson kill. The Golden Eagles answered with four consecutive points to get within 8-7 and later tied the set at 10-10, but Cooper kills on two of the Golden Hurricane's next three points and a Rachel Megna service ace helped TU move back in front at 13-11. Mills then served four straight Golden Hurricane points, with Vance recording two kills in that stretch, before the Golden Eagles cut the margin to 17-14. Tulsa closed by taking seven of the final eight points, as Vance had consecutive kills to reach 20-14, Bacorn put down a kill for 21-15 and then served the final four points, finishing the 25-15 set with an ace.
After an even start left the Golden Hurricane down 11-10, Mikey Freeman tied the third set with a kill and Vance delivered three kills as TU moved in front 15-12. The Golden Eagles came back to 16-16 on Ana Stojicic's kill and a Tulsa attack error, but Hanson put the Golden Hurricane back ahead with a kill before a Golden Eagles attack error and a Mills kill made it 19-16. The Golden Eagles got back to 19-17, and the Golden Hurricane closed the set with six straight points: Bacorn and Ava Steffe had kills, Cooper and Steffe combined on a block, Cooper added a kill, Hanson served an ace and Mills finished the 25-17 set with a kill from Meg Goodwin.
Up next, the Golden Hurricane will travel to Lawrence, Kan., to face South Dakota State and #22 Kansas on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12-13, in the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena.
