Honolulu - Hawaii senior Crystal Lee recorded game-highs of 21 points and eight rebounds and the Rainbow Wahine broke a 28-28 halftime with a 15-5 run to begin the second half and edge Tulsa, 63-53, in front of 1,714 at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
Tulsa drops to 4-13 overall this season and 1-5 in Western Athletic Conference play. Junior Leela Farr led four Hurricane into double figures with a team-best 12 points. Freshman Kim Chiconas recorded another solid performance as she came off the bench to score 11 points and, along with junior Carla Morrow, collected a team-high seven rebounds. Morrow added 11 points, while freshman Candice Brewer chipped in 10 points. Senior Athena Pirpich, the team's second-leading scorer with 9.4 points per game, was held scoreless, but did dish-out five assists.
Hawaii improves to 13-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Senior Kylie Galloway was the only other Wahine to reach double digits with 16 points. UH connected on 24-of-52 field goals for 46.2 percent for the game.
With the halftime score knotted at 28-28, Lee and Galloway turned the game around as the duo combined for 11 of UH's 15 points during the15-5 second half run that proved to be the difference in the contest. Hawaii went on to outscore Tulsa the second half, 35-25.
For the second straight game, Tulsa recorded a solid first half, but failed to finish in the second period. After shooting 42.3 percent from the field, including 43.0 percent from behind the three-point line, in the first half, Tulsa's shooting went south and TU finished 9-of-29 from the field in the second half, including 0-of-6 from beyond the arc.
The two teams recorded a nearly identical opening period of play. Both Tulsa and Hawaii were 11-of-26 from the field, 3-of-7 from behind the three-point line and 3-of-5 from the free-throw line. Tulsa played without the services of freshman center Becky Heidotten who sat out the game with a leg injury. So, without the services of its third-leading scorer and fourth-leading rebounder, TU was left vulnerable on the boards. Hawaii rotated a pair of centers over 6-3, but the scrappy Hurricane defense managed to outrebound the taller Wahine, 18-16, in the first half and finished dead even for the game, 35-35. Lee paced the Hawaii attack in the initial period, hitting 4-of-7 field goals, including 3-of-4 treys. Morrow was the top scorer for TU in the first half with nine points.
