BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Tulsa (19-12) narrowly fell to North Texas (19-13), 76-73, in a tightly contested matchup Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the American Women's Basketball Championship. The Golden Hurricane recorded 11 steals and 21 points off turnovers, which helped TU nearly erase a 19-point third quarter deficit.
"I'm incredibly proud of our team," Head Coach Angie Nelp said. "Incredibly proud of our heart, fight and grit we showed the entire game. It didn't go our way for us, but I couldn't be more proud of the way that they overcame so much in this game … This team chooses time and time again to stay together, fight together and carry each other. It speaks to who these young women are and how they hold tight to our culture of love, trust and work."
Redshirt senior forward Hannah Riddick led all scorers on the court with 26 points, just one point shy of her career-best, off 10/20 made fields and five free drained throws. She also led Tulsa with eight rebounds, three steals and one block.
Junior guard Mady Cartwright produced 16 points, while freshman guard Dora Toman finished with 11.
Two of the biggest factors of the game were rebounding and free throws. North Texas out-rebounded the Golden Hurricane 37-28 and made 20-of-28 free throws, while TU made 16-of-28 from the line.
The game began with Tulsa taking an early lead as Toman hit a 3-pointer assisted by Jade Clack, putting the home team ahead 3-0 at 9:41. The Golden Hurricane responded with a layup by Shamaryah Duncan at the 7:07 mark, assisted by Toman, which narrowed the score to 16-14. Duncan continued her impact with a 3-pointer, giving Tulsa a brief lead. However, North Texas regained control, highlighted by Mekhia Chase's 3-pointer at 5:14 and a late jumper from Jazzy Owens-Barnett with no time left on the clock, ending the quarter with North Texas leading 33-22.
North Texas extended its lead early in the third quarter with a 3-pointer from Schissler at 9:42, assisted by Owens-Barnett. Riddick responded with a layup at 8:52, reducing the deficit to 40-24. A quick scoring sequence saw North Texas's Megan Nestor and Aysia Proctor hitting layups, pushing the lead to 45-26. Toman made a significant impact with a layup and a 3-pointer, narrowing the gap to 49-37 at 4:09. Late in the quarter, Mady Cartwright added two free throws with 36 seconds left, closing the third quarter with Tulsa trailing 58-50.
In the fourth quarter, North Texas held a narrow lead, but Riddick provided a spark with a layup at 9:37, cutting the score to 58-52. The Mean Green responded with a series of free throws and a fast-break layup by Chase at 4:41, extending its advantage to 64-55.
