Tulsa Closes Out 2001 Home Slate Against #28 Bradley, Eastern Illinois:
Tulsa (7-7, 2-3 MVC) concludes a five-game homestand this weekend with contests at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex against 28th-ranked Bradley (9-4-1, 4-1 MVC) and Eastern Illinois (4-8, 0-5 MVC).
On Friday, Oct. 26, Tulsa faces its second straight nationally ranked opponent in as many weeks when Bradley comes to Tulsa for a 7:00 p.m. game. TU leads the all-time series with Bradley, 6-1-1. In fact, the Braves are winless in Tulsa with an 0-4-1 mark. Last season, TU and BU battled to a double-overtime 1-1 tie. Bradley's only win in the series was a 3-1 victory in 1992.
The Golden Hurricane closes out the home portion of the 2001 slate on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 2:35 p.m. against Eastern Illinois. The Panthers captured a 1-0 win last season over the Golden Hurricane and leads the overall series, 1-0.
TU Falls to Top-Ranked SMU, 2-0:
Top-ranked and undefeated SMU took advantage of two critical errors by Tulsa and turned both of them into two scoring opportunities as the Mustangs tallied one goal in each half to hand the Golden Hurricane a 2-0 setback at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex. The Mustangs, winners of 12 straight games, scored one goal in each half. TU junior goalkeeper Brent Salter (Conway, Ark.) collected two saves.
Largest Crowd in School History Watches TU Fall to No. 1 SMU:
Although the outcome was not in TU's favor, a school-record audience of 2,533 turned out at the Donna J. Hardesty to watch the Golden Hurricane battle the No. 1 team in the nation, the SMU Mustangs. The last time TU played at home before a crowd of 1,000 or more was during the 1997 season when the Hurricane topped the UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos, 3-1, in front of 1,125 spectators on Oct. 24, 1997.
The crowd of 2,533 is the largest home crowd of any Missouri Valley Conference team this season. Currently, the Hurricane is averaging 718 fans per game at home this season.
TU to Honor Senior Trio On "Senior Day" Against Eastern Illinois:
Sunday's game against Eastern Illinois is "Senior Day" at TU as the Golden Hurricane will honor its three seniors prior to the game.
Giancarlo Barzotti (Yorba Linda, Calif.) is a three-year letterwinner who has started 51 of 59 games played. He scored one goal and earned one assist for three career points. He is a three-year member of the TU Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
Brent Bayouth (Sapulpa, Okla.) transferred to Tulsa from Northeastern State prior to the 2000 campaign. In just under two seasons, Bayouth has started three of 30 games played and has scored six goals for 12 points.
Tulsa native Chris Spears is a three-year letterwinner and starter. Spears has started 57 of 69 games played and has career numbers of 10 goals and 11 assists for 31 points. As a junior, he led the team in assists with seven.
Player Notes:
Brent Salter was named the Brine Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 8-14.
Two weeks ago, Salter led the Golden Hurricane to a 2-0 record with back-to-back home wins against Creighton and Drake. The 2-0 shutout victory over Creighton snapped a 10-year drought for the Hurricane in the series. In that match, Salter faced 17 shots, making six crucial saves in wet conditions. He also defended seven Creighton corner kicks. It marked Salter's third shutout of the season. He added a save in the Tulsa victory against Drake.
Since Tulsa was a member of the Western Athletic Conference from 1996-1999, Salter is the first TU player to receive MVC Player of the Week honors since Jimmy Dowell (1990-94) in 1994.
Team Notes:
Seven of Tulsa's 11 starters against top-ranked SMU were either freshmen or sophomores and only one starter- Chris Spears- was a senior. Four freshmen including JJ Havlik (Tulsa, Okla.), Kyle Brown (Southlake, Texas), Michael Haynes (Coppell, Texas) and Scott Kincaid (Mission Hills, Kan.) and three sophomores, including Stephen Warwick (Morpeth, England), Bryan Rudd (Arlington, Texas) and Matt Yeager (Rockwall, Texas) each received the starting nod against the No. 1-ranked Mustangs. Freshman James Dabney (Los Alamos, N.M.) and sophomore Kris Glasser (Oklahoma City, Okla.) each came off the bench and saw significant minutes as well.
