Tulsa, Oklahoma - The 48th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers won the doubles point and split the six singles matches with Tulsa to post a 4-3 upset victory over the Hurricane on the first day of the Blue-Gray Classic at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala.
Due to a series of rain delays, the match was played in reverse order with singles first and doubles last.
In singles action, the two teams split the six matches with junior Dane McGregor, freshman Alejandro Tejerina and junior Sean Monk each posting wins at their respective positions. McGregor's victory was his 11th straight of the spring season and he remains undefeated in dual contests and at the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
Monk's 6-1, 6-2 win over Chou gave him his 16th win of the season. He surpassed his previous mark of 15 wins, which he recorded during his freshman season of 1998-99.
With the match tied at 3-3, the two teams headed into doubles play. The marquee contest of the match was at the top doubles position with Tulsa's 27th-ranked doubles tandem of McGregor and classmate Shriranga Sudhakara versus Virginia's top-ranked team of Brian Vahaly and Huntley Montgomery.
Vahaly and Montgomery promptly dispatched TU's McGregor and Sudhakara, 8-2 and was within one doubles match of capturing the doubles point and securing the victory.
The Cavaliers slipped past TU's No. 3 doubles combination of juniors Sean Monk and Pawel Sebastyanski, 8-5, to win the match.
