Tulsa, Oklahoma - Tulsa sophomore sensation Aleksandra Durska captured a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No.2 singles spot over Oregon's Jeanette Mattsson to snap a 3-3 tie and give the Hurricane a 4-3 victory over the Ducks today at the Harwell Tennis Courts.
Although Tulsa (12-6) never trailed Oregon (4-14), the Ducks refused to back down from the 34th-ranked Golden Hurricane. TU began the contest with a clean sweep in double to secure the all-important doubles point.
After a brief intermission, Oregon quickly tied the match when Janice Nyland defeated Tulsa junior Bianca Posada, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 1 singles spot. The Hurricane regained the lead when senior Jennifer DeSpain made quick work of UO's Monika Gieczys at the No. 3 slot in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
The Ducks then won two of the three contests in the bottom half of the lineup to tie the match. TU freshman Mariana Barrios captured a key match at the No. 6 position, dispatching Vickie Gunnarsson, 6-1, 6-4.
The match ultimately came down the No. 2 position between Durska and Mattsson. After a lengthy first set in which Durska won, 6-3, the second set was filled with intensity and anticipation. Durska looked to have the match in hand with a 5-2 advantage. But Mattsson rallied and cut the deficit to 5-4. With Mattsson serving, Durska needed five match points to pull out the 6-4 win and clinch the match for the Hurricane.
