Tulsa, Oklahoma - University of Tulsa junior Dane McGregor has been named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Region V Player to Watch, while freshman Alejandro Tejerina was named the ITA Region V Rookie of the Year following a vote by the region's head coaches.

A native of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, McGregor, who completed the season as the top singles player in Region V, became just the third player in the 46-year history of the Tulsa men's tennis program to participate in the modern format of the NCAA Tennis Championships. He joins former Hurricane All-Americans Nenad Toroman (1996-2000) and Gareth Williams (1996-99) as the only TU players to play in the NCAA Singles Championships.

After beginning the spring with an 11-match win streak, McGregor completed the season with a singles mark of 23-9, the most wins for him in a single season, and a record of 19-5 in spring dual matches. During the 2001 spring campaign, he spent a total of 12 weeks ranked among the nation's top-100 singles players. McGregor reached his highest ranking of his career this season when he appeared in the WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings on March 9 as the 39th-ranked singles player in the country.

A two-time Western Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week selection in 2001, McGregor was named to the all-WAC first team in both singles and doubles.

A native of Mar del Plata, Argentina, Tejerina posted a 12-13 singles record and an 8-5 doubles mark in his rookie season at TU. He played the majority of the spring season at the No. 4 position in the singles lineup and recorded an 11-13 dual mark. In his only appearance at the No. 3 singles slot, he was 1-0.

In doubles action, Tejerina teamed with junior Pawel Sebastyanski in 12 of 13 dual matches and registered an 8-4 mark at the No. 2 spot in the doubles lineup.

Both players are now eligible for the national awards, which will be announced on Wednesday, May 23, at the 2001 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship site next week.
