TU Golfers Complete First Day of Landfall Classic

Wilmington, NC - The Tulsa women's golf team carded a sixth-place total of 306, while the Golden Hurricane men's team got off to a slow start with a 12-place total of 306 on the first day of The Landfall Tradition Collegiate Golf Tournament at the Country Club of Landfall.
Defending national champion Minnesota tops the men's field while Arizona State and Wake Forest share the women's lead after the first day.
Freshman Christine Fernandez carded an 18-hole, three-over par 75 in the opening round and leads the TU women with a ninth-place showing, while David Inglis shot a one-over par 73 to finish in 17th-place.
The Golden Gophers shot a 283 to open up a six-stroke lead over host UNC Wilmington at 289. Three of Minnesota's five players broke par, led by a pair of 70's carded by Simon Nash and Justin Smith. Individually, Purdue's Peter Karmis fired a 4-under-par 68 for a one-stroke advantage over Missouri's David Jenkins and Virginia Tech's Ryan Stinnett.
Overall, 11 players broke par in the men's tournament and the 68 by Karmis was just three strokes off the course record.
On the women's side, Arizona State and Wake Forest are deadlocked with 298 scores after the opening day, with Florida State trailing by just four shots. Individually, WFU senior Nuria Clau was the only woman to break par, shooting a 71 for a one-stroke lead over ASU's Sara Jones.
The 24 teams play the second of three rounds Saturday, beginning with tee times at 7:30 a.m. at the Pete Dye Course layout.
