Sparks, Nevada - The nation's third-ranked Tulsa Golden Hurricane women's golf team began defense of its Western Athletic Conference golf title in fine fashion at the par-72 Red Hawk Golf Club in Sparks, Nevada, on Monday. The Hurricane scored an opening round four-under par 284 to take a 15-stroke lead over second-place San Jose State.

The Spartans scored an 11-over par 299, and are followed by host Nevada's 309, fourth-place UTEP at 312, Boise State in fifth place at 314, sixth-place SMU at 315 and seventh-place Hawaii at 324.

A heavy favorite heading into WAC Championship play, Tulsa held on to the first four spots in the individual race while building its team lead. Two-time WAC Player of the Year Stacy Prammanasudh paced the Hurricane with a three-under par 69, scoring rounds 35 on the front nine, and 34 on the back side. The nation's second-ranked golfer, Prammanasudh had five birdies today, and was two-under par for the day on the four par-five holes.

Fellow senior Dani Mallon is in second-place, two strokes behind Prammanasudh, after turning in a one-under par 71 round. Junior Maiko Senda and sophomore Suzie Fisher are tied for third-place after even-par rounds of 72 today.

San Jose State's Helle Gram sits in fifth-place with a one-over par 74, while teammate Marcela Leon is next after scoring a round of 74 on Monday.

Mallon, the nation's 40th-ranked golfer, and Fisher, ranked 27th in the most recent national rankings, each carded a three-under par 33 on the back nine today for the best nine-hole scores of the day. Mallon and Fisher each carded four birdies in the first round, and shared the tournament lead for par-four scoring at one-under par.

Sophomore Julie Tvede salvaged a good first round following a front nine score of 40. She rebounded in the afternoon with a 36 on the back side for her four-over par score of 76, which ties her for 11th place overall.

The Hurricane is looking for its fourth straight WAC title, which a win in Nevada would tie Tulsa with New Mexico for the most conference championships. This is only the sixth WAC Championship the Hurricane women have participated in since the school became a league member in the 1996-97 season.

Competition will continue on Tuesday with the second of three rounds.
