Tulsa Begins Quest for 2002 WAC Championship:
Tulsa (14-10) returns to the hard courts this week for the 2002 Western Athletic Conference Championship, April 26-28. TU concluded the 2001-02 regular season with a 14-10 record, the most wins since the 1997-98 campaign when the Hurricane posted a 15-12 mark. Tulsa recorded an 11-3 home record this year.
TU To Host 2002 WAC Championship:
The University of Tulsa will serve as the host institution for the 2002 WAC Championship, April 26-28, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at The University of Tulsa. The WAC Championship will serve as the first major tournament for the recently completed facility. The 2002 WAC Championship marks the third time the Hurricane has hosted a WAC Tennis Championship as TU also hosted the 1997 Women's and 1998 Men's Tennis Championship.
Tulsa in the WAC Championships:
The Golden Hurricane is making its sixth straight appearance in the WAC Championship. Since, joining the league in 1996-97, TU has appeared in every postseason tournament. Tulsa has a 5-5 all-time record in the WAC Championship and made its best showing during the 1999 tournament when the Hurricane won two matches against Utah (4-0) and 16th-ranked TCU (4-3) before falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Fresno State, 4-3.
McGregor, Sudhakara Continue TU's Doubles Dominance:
Over the past five years, Tulsa has produced some of the best doubles teams in the nation. TU's 1997-98 doubles tandem of Louie Pranic (1995-98) and Gareth Williams (1996-99) were ranked the entire season, including No. 4, which is the highest ranking in school history, and advanced into the quarterfinals of the 1998 Doubles Championships to become Tulsa's first All-American players. A year later, Williams and Nenad Toroman (1996-2000) reached All-America status when they battled for the national doubles championships at the 1999 NCAA Tournament but fell short and finished as the national runner-up. This season, seniors Dane McGregor and Shriranga Sudhakara have continued TU's doubles excellence. TU's top tandem has been ranked as high as No. 20 among the nation's top combinations and has an overall record of 25-9.
