Golden Hurricane Stuns No. 15 UW-Milwaukee 2-1 in Overtime:
Tulsa sophomore Kyle Brown (Southlake, Texas) tallied his first goal of the season just :49 seconds into overtime to lead the Golden Hurricane to a 2-1 upset victory over 15th-ranked Wisconsin-Milwaukee at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex on Saturday.
In the season opener for both teams, Tulsa notched the game's first goal when freshman forward Ryan Pore (Mansfield, Ohio) found the back of the net at 20:55. Brown was credited with an assist on the goal.
The Panthers finally got on the board at 86:44 to tie the game at 1-1. Barely one minute into overtime, Michael Haynes (Coppell, Texas) lofted a high pass over several Panther players where Brown gained control of the ball and beat two defenders and the goalkeeper to chalk up the "Sudden Goal" :49 seconds into the extra period.
One NCAA Team Down, Seven to go; Tulsa Looks to Become Giant Killers in 2002:
Tulsa's 2-1 overtime win over UW-Milwaukee marked the first of eight games for TU against 2001 NCAA Tournament teams. After defeating the Panthers, the Hurricane will face its second NCAA postseason team this weekend in UMKC at the Microtel Inn & Suites/Golden Hurricane Kickoff Classic. The six other postseason teams include California, Creighton, Gonzaga, SMU, Stanford and UAB.
Brown Named to College Soccer News National Team of the Week and MVC Offensive Player of the Week:
For his one goal, one assist effort in TU's upset win over 15th-ranked UW-Milwaukee, Tulsa's Kyle Brown has been named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week and the MVC Offensive Player of the Week. Brown earned his 19th consecutive start in the season opener against the Panthers and had a hand in both of TU scores with an assist on the Hurricane's first goal and he scored the game-winning goal in overtime. Brown is the first Golden Hurricane player to receive College Soccer News' National Team of the Week honors.
Pore Tallies First Collegiate Goal; Named TU's "Man of the Match" Against NO. 15 UW-Milwaukee:
Freshman Ryan Pore has already had a huge impact for the Golden Hurricane season despite the fact TU has only played two exhibition games and one regular season contest.
In his first regular season game, Pore was not just the only freshman in the starting lineup, but he cracked the scoring column for the first time in his career when he nailed a first-half goal against Wisconsin-Milwaukee. For his efforts, Pore was rewarded with the TU "Man of the Match" award against the Panthers.
In an exhibition game against Drury, Pore flashed his talent and quickness with three second-half goals for a hat trick.
Hurricane Tidbits:
TU's 2-1 overtime upset of #15 UW-Milwaukee marked the Hurricane's first win over a nationally-ranked team since 1999 when Tulsa downed No. 22 Bowling Green, 4-2. The victory was also TU's first win in a regular season opener since defeating UAB, 4-3, in 1999.
UW-Milwaukee isn't the first nationally-ranked team TU has upended. Over the past four seasons, the Hurricane has upset four top-25 teams including back-to-back wins over No. 24 San Jose State and No. 8 SMU, which currently stands as the biggest upset in school history, in 1998, Bowling Green in 1999 and UW-Milwaukee in 2002.
After the first week of play, Tulsa's 2002 opponents have combined for a 13-7-5 overall record. In this week's College Soccer News Top-30 National Poll, a total of six of TU's 2002 opponents are ranked, including top-ranked Stanford. Other ranked teams include SMU (#8), Creighton (#22), UW-Milwaukee (#23), UAB (#26) and Bradley (#29).
In this week's National Soccer Coaches of America Association (NSCAA) rankings, Tulsa received votes for consideration to be ranked among the nation's top-25 and is ranked No. 4 in the region behind top-ranked SMU, Bradley and Saint Louis, respectively.
Team Notes:
Tulsa's 2002 squad is a young, but very experienced team. In the season opener against UW-Milwaukee, TU started six underclassmen, including freshman Ryan Pore and five sophomores, including Kyle Brown, Jamie Dabney (Los Alamos, N.M.), J.J. Havlik (Broken Arrow, Okla.), Michael Haynes and Scott Kincaid (Mission Hills, Kan.). Along with juniors Stephen Warwick (Newcastle, England) and Bryan Rudd (Arlington, Texas), TU's starting lineup featured the senior trio of Brent Salter (Conway, Ark.), Mario Gonzalez (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Derek Meyers (Chesterfield, Mo.).
