Tulsa, Okla. - The 45th-ranked Golden Hurricane posted a 2-0 record Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, defeating Southwest Missouri State 6-1, and cross-town rival Oral Roberts 5-2.
Tulsa (3-0) claimed the doubles point against SMS with victories in both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Freshman Aleksander Charpantidis and junior Alejandro Tejerina defeated Pavel Hanek and Rishi Garbharran, SMS' No. 1 duo, 8-4, while junior Dustin Taylor and freshman Shunsuke Shimizu teamed up to win 8-5 at the No. 2 slot.
The Golden Hurricane went on to win five of six singles points against SMS. Tejerina defeated Hanek at the No. 1 slot 6-2, 6-2, while Taylor defeated Garbharran 6-1, 6-1 and Charpantidis overcame Filip Knezevic, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, to wrap up the top of the lineup.
Freshmen Shimizu, Olof Sjolund and Ricardo Rojas completed the lineup for TU, in the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 slots, respectively. Shimizu claimed an easy 6-0, 6-1 victory over SMS' Predrag Pavlicic, while Sjolund defeated Nenad Curcic 6-3, 6-4. Rojas, on the other hand, was not able to hold on to a victory, losing to Shingiray Nyagura 6-0, 1-6, 4-6
In competition against the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles, the Hurricane captured the doubles point, winning all three matches. Charpantidis and Tejerina once again teamed up, this time defeating Jared Welch and Matt Munson 8-2 in the No. 1 slot. Shimizu and Taylor won the No. 2 position with their 8-4 victory over Kevin Garlington and Eddie Paez, while Matthews and Sjolund defeated Chris Moore and Wessel Kemp 8-5.
In singles competition, Tulsa captured four of six points, losing at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions. Tejerina defeated Welch 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 slot, while Shimizu earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Garlington.
In the bottom half of the lineup, Sjolund dominated the No. 4 position, defeating Moore 6-3, 6-1 while Rojas defeated Kemp 7-6, 6-2.
