Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa rowing team completed the season at the Lexus Cup Central/South Region Sprints on Sunday on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
The Golden Hurricane did not end the season the way they had envisioned, having not met their goal of racing in the petite final at the regional competition, but TU turned in a better performance in the final day of competition than on the day before. "The team is disappointed with how they raced this weekend, but they can take heart in knowing that overall we improved as a team this year, and we will continue to get stronger and faster," Head Coach Kevin Harris said.
In the Varsity 4, the team finished with a time of 7:51.7 for a fifth-place finish in the C Final. "The Varsity 4 just needed to row again," Harris stated. "Yesterday was the first time that these women completed a 2000 meter race together in the four, and I think that they put together a much better race today."
"Amy McGhee showed tremendous leadership," Harris said. "This was the first time that she stroked a four in competition and I think that she really kept the team together."
The Varsity 8 also completed a better race today, putting up a time of 6:56.8 for a third-place finish in the D Final. "Tulsa raced a stronger race against Kansas and Indiana today than they have previously in the year," said Harris.
"The team is upbeat about the season, even though they did not race their best this weekend," stated Harris. "I believe the team represented the school well. We are racing in the top group of boats in the country, and finishing 21st just goes to show how fast this field of boats really is."
"With seven boats ranked in the top-20, some of the fastest racing times ever raced at the regional championships were recorded this weekend," added Harris. "By racing among the best we will build for the future. The team is already committed to improving next year and in 364 days we will be back racing amongst the nation's best and by then we will be stronger and faster and looking to take some of these teams on."
