Tulsa Women Golfers Struggle on Day One of NCAA Championships

West Lafayette, Indiana - Fortunately for the Tulsa golf team three rounds of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf National Championship remain. After day one, Tulsa sits in a tie for 21st place in the field of 24 teams.
The Hurricane carded a 41-over par round of 329 on Tuesday at the par-72 Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. As a team, Tulsa carded just five birdies on the day with 24 bogeys, nine doubles and one triple bogey counting on the Hurricane scorecard.
Southern California is in first place after an opening round score of 17-over par 305. Three strokes back sits Oklahoma State with a 308 score, followed by Ohio State (309), Florida (313) and UCLA (314) rounding out the top five teams. The 6-10 spots are occupied by Pepperdine (315) in sixth place, followed by Stanford and host Purdue (316) in a two-way tie for seventh-place and a ninth-place tie between Texas and Auburn (317).
For the Hurricane, only freshman Christine Fernandez scored in the 70s today, as she carded a first round six-over par 78. Tulsa had to also count an 82, 84 and 85 as part of its first round team score. Juniors Suzie Fisher and Julie Tvede had scores of 82 and 84, respectively, and a pair of true freshmen Cas Bridge and Courtney Jones tied with 13-over par 85s.
With her six-over par score, Fernandez sits in 20th place for the Hurricane as no under-par scores and just two even-par rounds were scored in the first round of the national tournament.
With Tulsa beginning play on the10th hole today, Fernandez made the turn with a four-over par 40. She had three bogeys and one double bogey on her first nine holes. She had a double and triple on the back-side, but also birdied three holes including her 16th and 17th hole to end up even on the front nine.
Individually, Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn and Oklahoma State's Annie Thurman are tied for first-place after even-par rounds of 72 today.
The 72-hole tournament will continue on Wednesday with the second 18 holes.
